BASKETBALL NOTES
JL -DiJLLiJU NOTES —» . - [By SHOOTER.] The New Zealand tournament Is almost upon us and the Canterbury team will hold its last practice on Saturday. Individnally, the team has improved greatly, but stronger opposition than is available locally will have to be met before really good team work will be noticeable. It would be well for the centres to bear in mmd that too many passes near the goal section may lose the ball for their side. A direct pass to the forwards would be less risky. Thanks are due to Mr Fred Lovett for his splendid coaching. His keen interest and understanding of the game has incited the girls to do their best and a higher standard of play has resulted. Canterbury has in its captain, Joan Gibson, a good all-round sports girl. Besides being a keen swimmer and tennis player, she has done well in athletics. At Sumner school in 1921, and again in 1922, she won the junior sports championship, and the next year at the same school she won the | senior sports championship. At St.
Michael';; .school in 1924 she wou a trophy for the best all-round sports ijirl, and in 1926 she was awarded the bronze medallion for life-saving. She played hockey for the Girls' High School first XI. in 1927, and in the same year won the Christchurcli Girls' High School senior sports championship, when she equalled the school's record for the 100 yards sprint. Miss Gibson was a member of the Sumner Surf Club for a number of years, and was at one time lady club captain. She ifi captain of Digby's Basketball Club, and h;is been included in the Canterbury representative team for the last three years.
