Sir Hubert Wilkins was a pas* senger for Wellington by the Rangatira last evening. The Hon. T. O'Byrne, M.L.C., wag a passenger from Wellington by tht Rangatira yesterday morning. Mr A. E. Hefford (Government Chief Inspector of Fisheries) is at present in Christchurch. Mr A. R. Brett returned to Auckland by the Monterey on Friday, after a trip to the United States. Mr S. J. Robinson, of Auckland, returned by the Monterey on Friday after a visit to the United States. Mr Harold Baxter, orchestral Conductor at Station IYA, returned to Auckland by the Monterey on Friday after a trip to California. Mr J. Mawson Stewart, who is on a business visit to Wellington, will return to Christchurch to-morrow morning. Mr G. Howes, representative of the Otago Acclimatisation Society Council on the fresh water research committee, is at present in Christchurch. Dr. G. F. V. Anson and Mr E. J. C. Wiffen (Wellington) are at present in Christchurch on Acclimatisation Society business. A motion of sympathy with Mr W. J. Humm in the death of his father was passed by the management committee of the Canterbury Horticultural Society last evening. Motions of sympathy with the relatives of Messrs D. A. Ashby and P. Dalrymple were passed at a i meeting of the committee of the I Canterbury Cricket Association last night. % The Rev. Brother Benignus, Provincial of the Marist Brothers in New Zealand, returned to Auckland by the Monterey on Friday, after inspecting the work of the Order in the Islands. Mr F. T. Vasey, president of the Council of Christian Congregations at Palmerston North for the last three years, has resigned to accept an appointment at Bournemouth, England. He will leave New Zealand in about three weeks' time. Mr George William Hutchison* Mayor of Auckland, was appointed to a seat on the head office board of the Standard Insurance Company, at a meeting of directors of the company, held in Dunedin yesterday.—Press Association. Mr J. F. Quinn, who has been appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands in Christchurch, to replace Mr W. Stewart, the Valuer-General, will arrive from Napier on Saturday morning to take up his duties here. The members of St. Andrew's Church Male Voice Choir last evening carried a motion of sympathy with the family of the late Mr Arthur Thyne Reid. Several members spoke of the fine qualities of Mr Reid, both as a friend and as a chorister. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr J. T. Sinclair was passed last evening at the meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Horticultural Society. The chairman (Mr M. J. Barnett) said that Mr Sinclair was one of the society's most valued members, one of the best-known practical gardeners in New Zealand, a keen and successful exhibitor for many years, and one of the most widely-respected judges. Mr C. E. Robertson, of Wellington, has received an invitation from the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria to act as a cattle judge at the forthcoming Centenary Royal Show commencing in Melbourne on October 18. This will be the third occasion on which Mr Robertson has acted in a similar capacity at Royal Shows, having previously judged at both the New South Wales and New Zealand Royal Shows. Other judges are being brought from England and from Jersey Island. Mr Robertson is very well known to stocic breeders throughout the Dominion, as for the last 12 years he has acted as manager of the Stud Stock and Bloodstock Department of Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Company, Limited.
