DRESSCUTTING AND DESIGNING
What an asset it is for every womaa to be able to cut and make perfect fitting clothes for herself or for anyone else. The art of cutting and designing will be demonstrated in Christchurch on Monday afternoon next by Mr Hudson Stanley, Director of the McCabe Academy of Dressmaking; when he will give a lecture-demon-stration in the Caledonian Hall, Kumore street. Ladies will be shown how to cut any style of frock from any picture to fit any figure, and a very interesting afternoon is promised" An advertisement appears elsewhere in this issue. —* Damage done by lipstick to frocks being tried on by mannequins and customers has caused some London dressmakers to introduce a "lip* mask," a paper shape covering th» mouth, with a projection behind to b« gripped between the teeth.
HUNT BALL
BRILLIANT SUCCESS I I THEIK EXCELLENCIES ATTEND A very successful hunting season fol- ' ]owed by a good steeplechase meeting , and concluded with a brilliant ball, graced by the presence of the Gover-nor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and Lady Blcdisloe —such is the enviable record of the Christchurch Hunt Club for 1934. The ball held at the Caledonian Hall last night was a magnificent success, such as has not been seen in Christchurch for many years. The frocking was beautiful. Many of the gowns had graceful trains, several were beaded; frocks of gaily patterned floral material were notably" smart, and gowns of gold and silver tissue, and those of velvet had an elegance all their own; lace was' much favoured, but was rivalled in popularity by -taffeta. t The members cf the committee who \ the ball were Mrs Gilbert Urigg. Mrs Derrick Gould, Miss Joan Fulton, Messrs Gilbert Grigg, W. Deans, K. M. D. Johnson, J. W. Woodhouse, and Warner Westenra, and to them sincere congratulations are due, for they attended to every detail that could increase the enjoyment of their guests. The Decorations The decorations were emblematic of the hunt. Sporting prints were hung en tlv: walls, and above them stretched on effective hunting pink frieze with silhouettes of hounds, hunters, and riders in hot pursuit of their quarry. The stage was banked with cinerarias and wattle, and the lounges were gay with daffodils. Refreshments were served at a buffet under the stage. The official party's supper table was lit with candles set in silver candelebra; on the other tables were crystal candlesticks with hunting pink shdaes. Music was supplied by Bob Bradford's/orchestra, the members of which wore pink coats. The Vice-Regal Party Their Excellencies Lord and Lady Bledisloe, attended by Lieutenant John Elworthy. arrived at the ball at 9.30 oclock. They were welcomed by Mr D. W. Westenra. president of the Hunt Club, Mr Gilbert Grigg, master of the Hunt, and Mrs Grigg. Her Excellency wore a beautiful frock of ivory tulle, run with silver thread, the long tunic being lavishly beaded with crystal and rhinestones. one wore a white fur wrap with collar of white fox.
