MEETING OF KATKI'AYEKS' ASSOCIATION At a meeting of the Wool?ton Ratepayers' Association, Mr B. T. Turner presided. A letter was received from the United Burgesses' Association granting affiliation and advising that the Woolaton Ratepayers' Association was entitled to two delegates. The town clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) advised that the works committee of the council was unable to see its way to accede to tho request to have Broad street paved and channelled, but had arranged to have the street tidied and improved. The Opawa Hillsborough Burgesses' Association wrote regarding boundaries. The secretary, Mr E. L. Hills, stated that he had spoken to the president and the secretary of that association and made the position clear to the satisfaction of both parties. The Christchurch Citizens' Association wrote congratulating members upon their initiative in forming a ratepayers' association, rind offering the services of two speakers to address a meeting of ratepayers-. It was decided to accept tho offer of the Citizens' Association at a date to be arranged. As complaints had been received regarding the escape of sulphuretted hydrogen (H2S), it was decided to request the City Council to locate the source of the trouble and to take steps to have tho complaint remedied. A letter of congratulation is to be sent to the Drainage Board for its prompt action In cementing up the drain leading Into the river from the Davis Gelatine (N.Z.), Ltd.'s section, and thereby preventing the drainage of sludge direct into the river. In view of the proposed extension of Davis Gelatine CN.Z.), Ltd.'s, works, it was unanimously decided to request the council to refrain from giving any permit to extend until present nuisances are abated. It was reported lhat good progress was being made with the beautification of the triangular plot at Ihe corner of Princes street and Victoria terrace. By direction of the chairman of the by-laws committee a copy of a long report furnished by Dr. Jessie Scott to the council was dealt with. Members expressed satisfaction with the report and slated that it supported the J made by the association, the findings being:—(l) The "mell of the sludge is offensive to the'pub ,2 ) 't is probably not directly injurious to health; (U) the effluent passing into the river is probably innocuous; (4) the smell would be sufficient to lower the value of a residential aiea; (5) the nuisance can be abated by a different method of disposing of the sludge and effluent.
