OLD PUPILS' DAY
WEST CHRISTCHURCH DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL The annual old pupils' day at the Christchurch West District High School was held yesterday, when Rugby, hockey, and basketball matches between past and present scholars were held in South Hagley Park. The present pupils were successful in each of the five matches played. The Rugby match was an excellent contest between two well-matched teams. The present pupils won by 15 points to 13, although outweighted by their opponents. Good tackling kept the old boys' rearguard in check, and the present pupils' forwards showed fine combination in concerted rushes with short passing. The scorers for the present pupils were Dempsey (tfwo tries) and Thompson, Mahoney converting all three. For the old boys McKay, Lindsay, and O'Brien scored tries, Thomson and Scott each converting one. The basketball match resulted in a win for the present pupils by 7 goals to 4. Grace Campbell scored most ot the winning teams' points, while for the old girls Misses Rona Green, Betty Chapman, and Iraleen Denny were the scorers. The B teams played a netball match, the present gins again winning by 12 points to 9. By 3 goals to 0 the school's hockey team defeated the old girls in an interesting match marked by brigi" combined play. The scorers were Margaret Weir, Joan Hancox, and Pat. Bell. In the B teams' match the score was 4 goals to 0 in favour of the present pupils. . After the matches past and present pupils were entertained at afternoon tea in the school, the headmaster, Mr L. F. de Berry, presiding. The speakers included Miss N. Ruston (president of the Old Girls* Association), Mi' E. K. Phillips (representing the Old Boys' Association), and the captains of the teams.
