NORTH CANTERBURY
RANGIORA One candidate for membership was proposed at the meeting of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge of Manchester Unity Oddfellows on Monday night. Bro A. H. Miles, N.G.. presided. Members of the Loyal Cust Lodge paid an official visit, and at the conclusion of the business played a cards match, winning by 12 points. The scores were: —Cust 723 points, Rangiora 711. HAWARDEN A meeting of the Hawarden Plunket Society was held recently. Mrs R. E. Foster presided. There were present Dr. Wood, Mesdames J. K. Foi-rcster, E. C. White, J. Doak, J. A. Forrester. W. D. Dalzell, S. Ginders, A. Dalzell, R. Galletly, J. Bentlcy, and F. M. Wright. The main object of the meeting was to make arrangements for the annual spring flower show. The committee decided to hold the show in the last week in September. The parishioners of the Anglican Church, Horsley Downs, recently held a very enjoyable social evening at the home of Mr and Mrs Sproscn, Horsley Downs. Items were given by Mrs Baker and Mrs M. Philpott, Misses Vera and Rhoda Mason. Mr Cocks, Mr Sprosen, and Mr Barrett. MASON'S FLAT At the fortnightly euchre party organised by the Mason's Flat Hall Committee, the most successful players were Miss V. Mason and Mr M. O'Carroll. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs J. White and Mr R. Boyle. WAIPARA At the weekly shoot of the Glcninark Miniature Riile Club, the following wore the best scores:— G, Williams 70. J. CHEVIOT Arbor Day was observed at the Cheviot School on Monday, when more than 80 trees were planted in the school grounds. The trees were supplied by the Education Board, and comprised four varieties, pinus ponderosa, Douglas fir. redwood, and a few Lawsomana. The planting was carried out by the senior boys under the supervision of Mr J. H. Cooper and Mr T. Lewis. The new trees have been planted around the boundaries of the school grounds, and the ground; are now ful'v stocked with trees. Brown, of Soften, was celebrated by a family parly given by her daughter, Mrs L. G. Mehrtcns, at her home during last week-end. The decorate.l birthday cake wa., provided by another daughter, Mrs Key Croft, of Waiau. A very pleasant evening was spent. Those present besides the guest of honour included Mr and Mrs D. G. Mehrtcns, Mr and Mrs C. J. Quick. Mr and Mrs J. Quick, Mrs Roy Croft (Waiau), Mrs E. L. Burgess (New Brighton), Misses Mehrtcns (2), Messrs K. H. James, S. and L. Mehrtcns, and a number of grandchildren. The congregation of the Anglican Church at Scfton held a social gathering in the new Sunday School building to raise funis towards the furnishings. There was an excellent attendance.. The first part of the evening was occupied by community singing, led by Mr J. R. Cameron. The remainder of the evening was given over to dancing to music played by Mrs Shea, of Woodend. Extras were played by Miss Eaer. Mr D. Morris was master of ceremonies. The next session will be on August 27, wnen a declaration will be made as to whether or not the sessions will be continued CARLETON There was a good attendance at the fortnightly euchre party and dance organised by the Carleton Tennis Club. Dance music was played by Mr E. Campbell (Cust). Mr A. Inch was i master of ceremonies. Prizes for tho euchre were won by Miss N. Monro and Mr F. O'Neii. and consolations were awarded to Miss L. Hussey and Mr K. Fidler. A Monte Carlo was won by Miss Prcstcr and Mr E. McLaughlan. SOUTHBRIDGE The monthly meeting of the Southbridge Town Board, held on Monday evening, was presided over by Commissioner J. H. Hampton. A letter was received from the registrar of Canterbury College regarding repairs to the Canterbury Museum. It was proposed to call a conference of local body representatives to consider financial arrangements, as it had been suggested that these bodies should contribute to the maintenance of the museum. The board agreed to make an effort to be represented if a conference were called. -It was agreed to grant a lease of the Town ITi>El on Saturday evenings for two years to the local picture show proprietor. Members reported that several streets required metalling repairs. It was decided to procure Birdling's Flat shingle if possible for repairs to High street. j
EAST EYRETON There was a good attendance at the fortnightly social held in the hall in aid of the hall funds. Prizes for euchre were won by Mrs W. Martin and Miss Olive Baynon, Mr P. Don, and Mr J. Brick. Music for dancing was played by Mrs G. Saunders, with extras by Mrs M. Clarke. Mr and Mrs Deidrich (West Coast> are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. Patterson. MOUNT GREY DOWNS There was a good attendance at the fortnightly card party and dance held in the schoolroom by the social committee. Highest scores at cards were registered by Miss I. McGiffert and Mr D. Lang, The mystery prizes were won by Miss J. Reid and Mr F. Morris. After cards, dancing was enjoyed, the music being played by Miss A. Dalzell, Messrs S. Lilley, A. Vallance, and R. Vallance. Mr E. Demmocks was master of ceremonies. Miss Jean Falkinder sang two songs and Mr J. Demmocks gave humorous items. KOWAI BUSH A concert party under the leadership of Mr K. Archer, from Christchurch, gave an entertainment in aid of the hall funds. Mrs Voller (contralto) and Mr Archer (baritone) sang several songs; Mr J. Flewellyn gave several elocutionary items, while Messrs Brownie and J. Boughen provided humorous items. Mr Brownie's "Jerry" provided much fun, and a clever magician also amused the audience. A new note was introduced in the form of living marionettes byMessrs Brownie and Boughen. Community singing was led by Mr G. Walker. Mr Buchanan, chairman of the social club, thanked the concert party. The next day the visitors were lent horses and taken up to the headwaters of the Little Kowai, to Happy Valley, and to Lake Rubicon. In the evening a hard-up and fancy dress social "was held. A happy time was spent in gamer, and dancing. Amusing competitions were won by Mrs Howell, Messrs Russell, Vaughan, and Brownie. Items were given by Messrs J. Flewellvn, F. Brownie, and J. Boughen. Miss Lillian Harper was accompanist. PREBBLETON At the Anglican Sunday School a presentation was made to Miss Als Jones, who has relinquished her position as superintendent, owing to her removal to Christchurch. Joyce Coles, in asking Miss Jones to accept a leather handbag, expressed regret at her departure, and wished her happiness in her new work. Miss Jones replied. Playing basketball in the Domain on Saturday, the Probblettm B team was beaten bv Waikaipa by eight goals to seven. Mrs L. Harris was me referee. At the annual meeting of the amateur dramatic company Mr H. G. Preb-i ble presided. The balance-sheet prepared by the retiring secretary.
