TRANSPORT LICENSING AUTHORITY PREVENTION OP FIREBLIGHT (SPECIAL TO THE PBSSS.) NELSON, August 9. "What was described as a defect in the transport legislation was disclosed at a meeting of the No. 7 Licensing Authority to-day, when counsel (Mr W. V. Rout) for an applicant said that at present it was necessary for objections to an applu cation to be lodged. beforehand; but it was not compulsory for the grounds of the objection to be disclosed. Ha considered that the whole idea was wrong, because 24 hours' notice of an objection was no assistance to othet parties nor to the authority. The chairman (Dr. S. A. Gibbs) agreed that the act did not require grounds for objections to be stated with the notice; but that was not fair to the applicant. In the case under discussion, an objection against prices had been altered to an objection to the area applied for, counsel claiming that the applicant was thus deprived of an opportunity of prepar* ing a suitable case.

The annual report of the Waimea Fireblight Committee stated that to date approximately 230 miles of hawthorn hedges had been trimmed as 8 preventive measure against the spread of fireblight disease, which made its appearance at Wakapuaka last year and that arrangements were in hand for attention to more hedges before next spring. The committee had contributed more than £IOOO, collected from the fruit growers of the district, toward the cost of the work, and had , co-operated with the Public Works Department in the establishment of unemployed camps. Experiments are being carried out by the Cawthron Institute for the destruction of hawthorn by means of chemical sprays.; and it is hoped that an effective spray will be evolved te aid in the control of future outbreaks. Harbour Dredge Writing from England to the Nelson Harbour Board concerning the board's negotiations for the purchase of a dredge from an English firm, Mr C. T. Price, a member of the board, concluded his letter as follows: "I have no hesitation in advancing the opinion that the board should order a dredge at once, as our fruit is going steadily ahead in English markets. The expressed opinion here is that our Cox's Orange Pippin apples are unbeatable, and I am sure that fruit growers can look forward to better things." The chairman of the board, Mr A. Gould, said that when a man of Mr Price's calibre, a member well known for his cautious outlook, expressed an opinion of that description, then 'it should put heart into the fruit growers.
