SHOP MANAGER IN HOSPITAL I When Mi- W. G. Hill, manager of I the Self-Help store at Beckenham, an- | swered a knock on the door of the shop about 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday, i he was assaulted by a masked man and ' struck on the head with a club. Later ! the police made an arrest. I It is alleged that the assailant called Mr Hill by his Christian name and he barely had time to see that the caller was masked before he was struck. He cried out. and a passer-by who came to his aid secured a glimpse of a man making off. In the brief struggle, it. is stated, the man lost his bludgeon but grabbed at a bottle of kerosene, with which he made further assaults on Mr Hill, knocking him down. The police were called and Mr Hill was taken to a private hospital. Yesterday it was reported that although Mr Hill's condition was not serious, he had suffered bad cuts and bruises. He was considerably shaken, and it would be several days before he would be able to leave the hospital. On searching the scene the detective;; found a piece of wood, about 15 inches | long, with a rubber hand-grip. i In the Magistrate's Court, yesterday. j before Mr E. D. IvTosley, S.M., a youth iof 17 (Mr E. A. LeeJ. whose name ! was suppressed, was remanded to ap- : pear on August 16 on a charge of n.:I sault causing actual bodily harm.
