BASKETBALL NOTES

♦ • HINTS TO FORWARDS l viv sHOOTia; i So much responsibility rests on the shoulders of the forwards that their 'position is unenviable. The ball may ■tome down in a faultless passing movement from defence, through centre into forward third and up to the goal, and then all is wasted when an uncertain goalie fails to ring the ball. Shooting should be practised consistently until a good aim and confidence are attained. One is as important as the other. Practise with a defender whenever possible so that you may learn to time your shots, but beware of irregular jumping. When you are guarded do not be in a hurry to shoot. In most cases you will put :the defender off by holding the ball two or three seconds before shooting. Do not go over your time limit of ''three second's, however. One of the most difficult shots is to ring a ball when standing directly beneath the' goal post. This is almost

Olive Wheatlcy (United), whose dependable fieldwork and accurate shooting: is an asset to the Canterbury team.

Jin impossibility, so do not rn=k if. The difficulty may be overcome in this manner: A forward is preparing to .:-:hoot and is guarded. B forward Mhoqld move so as to stand directly behind A forward, who should drop the b?ll behind her into B's hands. The is totally unprepared for this and by the time the position is realised B forward, in a better position, has had an unguarded shot at the 'goal. An understanding amongst the ■<; goalies is essential. Their field work rxi just as important as their shooting, *arid they must be able to outwit their opponents. Numerous little tricks will stand them in good stead and will make the game a great deal more interesting. Fixtures August 11— Canterbury Junior B and C teams v. Banks Peninsula A and B teams.
