OXFORD SOCIETY

! i ♦ \ RAPID PROGRESS REPORTED a A record of rapid growth was pret sented at the second annual general t meeting of the Oxford Society, held - at the Foreign Office on June 27, f under the chairmanship of Viscount 5 Halifax, Chancellor of Oxford Umversity. Without any general appeal t for members, the membership of the society had increased by more than 1 800, to approximately 6570, since the : first annual general meeting a year L ' ago, and the executive committee reported that the year had been one of ® steady consolidation and development. 2 The society's system of local centres ~ had been a conspicuous success. One very important feature of the work 1 of these centres was to build up local 1 sub-committees to investigate and report on prospects of employment for 1 university graduates in their districts, s The society already had local officers f in nearly all districts in Great Britain s and scattered throughout the five s continents in such diverse places as * Tanganyika, Morocco, the Gold Coast, } British Columbia, Mexico, Chile, Pe- * king, Shanghai, Malaya, Persia, Tur- ' key, and Papua. It was hoped that i; shortly there would be few places on r the globe where an Oxford man would not be able to find a friendly welcome y,' from members of the society. Lord Hewart, the Lord Chief Justice, was elected a vice-president of - the society, in the place of Lord Halil, fax, who has now become its presi- - dent. Three vacancies on the council were filled by the election of Sir 0 Harry Peat, K.8.E., Sir Charles Shere rington, 0.M., G.8.E., and the president j' of Magdalen College, Professor G. S. p Gordon. Sir Harry Peat and the pres sident of Magdalen College had both a served for a year on the executive s committee, but for private reasons had a been obliged to resign. The two places t> left vacant on the executive eommit--1 tee were filled by the election of the Rev. Canon W. Thompson Elliott, - vicar of Leeds, and Sir E. Farquhar ■t Buzzard, Bart., Regius Professor of e Medicine at Oxford.
