GREYMOUTH HARBOUR BOARD MEETS (SPECIAL TO THE TRESS.) GREYMOUTH, August 9. Mr P. J. McLean presided over the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board. It was decided to suggest to the Marine Department that the balance of the money due to the board should be allowed to go towards the payment of interest and sinking fund. The secretary of the Marine Department wrote suggesting an. amendment to the new by-laws concerning signals, the amendment dealing with the signals to be ma'e by inward-bound vessels touching the bar. The harbourmaster, Captain F. W. Cox, said the suggestion was reasonable, and it was decided to amend the by-law on the lines suggested. No action was taken concerning a request from the Canterbury Education Board for a grant towards prizes for boys' and girls' agricultural club competitions. Basketball The mid-week competitions of the West Coast Basketball Association were completed yesterday. The winners of the A grade were Technical Old Girls, with Convent Old Girls A as runner-up. The B grade was won by Technical 31, with Blaketown B as runner-up. Grey Hospital Boari At last evening's meeting of the Greymouth Hospital Board, it was decide 1 that the honorary doctors' allegations should be held in abeyance until a report was received from the medical superintendent, and that in the event of his being in favour of having honorary physicians, a conference should be called between the board, medical superintendent, and honorary medical officers. It was state I that since putting in their resignations, the honorary doctors had ceased coming to the hospital. Mr H. G. Carter said he felt the honorary physicians had simply let the board down for reasons which he was not prepared to state, unless he were forced to do so. Consideration was given a letter from the Minister for Health putting before the board allegations concerning the administration of the hospital, which had been made by Mr F L Turley in his letter asking that' an enquiry should be held. League Football Mr A. H. McKane presidel over the weekly meeting of the management committee of the West Coast Rugby League. Because the match had finished before time, one side having only nine players and the other seven it was decided that the Marist-1-irates fourth grade match should be replayed.

The New Zealand League Council wrote stating that it had been decided

that South Island Leagues should find the expenses of their players to Lyttelton for the North v. South match, and that the council Would pay expenses from Lyttelton to Auckland and that the first call on the receipts of the match at Auckland would be the reimbursement of the South Island League. It was decided to accept these terms.

Advice was received that the Richmond Rovers Club (Auckland) would not be touring this year. Mr J. Neilson, referee of the Black-ball-Pirates senior game last Sunday, wrote regar ing the action of the Pirates Club in walking off the field He considered the action of Mr J. R Anderson, of the Pirates Club, in calling off the team to be unsportsmanlike, and asked that the league censure him. The matter was dealt with in committee. The following action was taken regarding those players ordered off:—Bowling stood down for one playing Calder, placed on the caution list; Fisher, exonerated; Preston, case referred to referees' association for a report of his statements to the referee. It was deci ed also to write to Mr Anderson stating that his action in calling off the team was considered unbecoming for a vicepresident of the league. Rugby Football Mr J. Guy presided over the weekly meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union last evening. Star Club wrote advising of the withdrawal of its junior team. The New Zealand Union wrote Advising that Mr Jefcoate (Canterbury) had been appointed to referee the Seddon shield game, "West Coast v. Marlborough, on Saturday next. It was deci .ed to write to the board of governors of the Technical School asking them to ratify the agreement made regarding the use of the grounds. Approval was given a request from the United Club for permission to sell badges on Saturday in aid of S. Hendry, an injured player. The United Ciub also advised that if was holding a card party for the same purpose. Motions of sympathy with Mr A. A. Adams in his illness, and with Mr Hendry were carried. It was decided that the four senior teams should be written to and asked to commence punctually.

HOKITIKA MINING EXECUTIVE (SPICIAL TO THE PR»SR > HOKITIKA, August 9. At the meeting of the mining executive for the Westland County, the report showed that the amount of gold won for the fortnight was 30oz Bdwt Bgrs, which was equal in value to two-thirds of the subsidy paid. Accounts totalling £3O 6s were passed for payment The Unemployment Board wrote stating that the report on the Humphreys area would be available shortly. Women's Hockey

The Rovers ladies' hockey team beat the Hokitika Club's team by throe goals to two, and thus won the Milhgan rose bowl. For the winners goals were scored by Misses D. Wallace (2), and F. .Wells, and for the

lasers by Misses J. Collett and J. Hall j/The following Hokitika players have peen chosen to represent the West in the Christchureh totimafient:— Mrs Eager, Misses R. and O. tapleton (Rovers), and Misses P. Dowell, I. TuUock, E. Howat, M. Hughes, and J: Hall (Hokitika Club). The Greymouth players selected are: —Mrs McKane. Mrs H'ggins, Misses N, Little, N. McGrath. and B. Gordon. Two more players will be selected later. Rugby Football The High School team played a match with a team picked from the local shop assistants, who are unable to participate in Saturday "games. School won by five points to three, Hanrahan scored a try, which Staple* ton converted, and R. Macdougall scored for the losers. Golf The following is the draw for the third round of the Newman Cup com* petition:— Adamson v. Nightingale, Baker v. Cagney, Cox v. Tomlinson, Ecclesfield v. Mcintosh, Warren v. Routledge, Cooke v. Andrewes, Stuart y. Reese. The Ladies' Golf Union August medal match was won by Mrs McIntyre. The medal match'in the unearned handicap division was won by Miss L. Knight Pontoon tor Bruce Bay The pontoon which is to be used at Bruce Bay to facilitate the loading of timber was towed south by tha m.v. Gael. In spite of a fairly strong sea the bar was crossed without much difficulty. The vessel also took with it a load of machinery for the new sawmill. REEFTON RUGBY FOOTBALL (SPECIAL TO THE PRESS.) REEFTON, August 9. Mr L. K. Austin presided over th« usual weekly meeting of the Inangahua Rugby Sub-Union. Mr J. Crossman was appointed manager of toS \third grade team to travel to Grey* mouth on Saturday. It was decided to ask the headmaster of the Reefton School to name a suitable date on which to play a match for the Newman Shield (secondary schools competition). Mr H. Kearns was appointed to represent the sub-union at the Rugby League ball, and it was decided to thank the Reefton League Club for its invitation.
