HOSPITAL BOARD'S EXPENDITURE

ESTIMATES EXCEEDED REPORT ON FINANCIAL POSITION The North Canterbury Hospital Board has expended £7Bl 6s more than the estimate for the quarter year, and the receipts show a shortage of £397 16s on the estimate for the quarter year, according to the financial statement placed before the board at its meeting yesterday. There were present Mr H. J. Otley (chairman), Mesdames J. A. Bean, T. Green, and I. Parlane, Sir Hugh Acland, Dr. P. S. Foster, Messrs J. K. Archer, J. S. Harnett, It. A. Bennett, James Boyd, H. R. Davison, L. B. Evans, W. T. Foster, H. H. Holland, F. Rowcll, A. T. Smith, W. P. Spencer, Thomas Thompson, and W. J. Walter. The financial statement set out that the proportional estimate of expenditure for the three months ended June 30 was £45,127 16s. The actual expenditure over the period was £45,909 2s. The proportional estimate of receipts for the quarter was £45,127 lCs, and the actual receipts £44,730. Hospital Committee's Report The hospital committee reported that the following fees had been received since the last meeting of the board:—

The average daily number of patients in hospital during the month of June was 383.83. In the venereal diseases department there were 1786 attendances by 'lO2 patients, 47 of whom were new. The whole of the nursing staff had been medically examined and the health of the nurses had been found to be excellent. On one or two occasions during the month the accommodation of the hospital had been heavily taxed, the number of patients reaching the high level ot 412. Of the 23 nurses who were qualified to sit for Hie State examination, 1C were successful in gaining a pass. Staff Nurse Narbey, who had completed her contract, would leave the staff on July 31. The report was adopted with the exception of a clause recommending that the vacancy of the matronship at Lincoln be filled by the transfer of Sister Scott from the Cheviot Hospital and that Sister Picken, a doubly qualified nurse and midwife with experience, be appointed to Cheviot. The recommendation, with a petition from 184 residents of Cheviot asking that Sister Scott "be retained there, was referred back to the committee.
