NORTH CANTERBURY

EANGIORA A sunshine fair, organised by the Rangiara Salvation Army, in aid of its funds, was held yesterday, and was very successful. The Mayor, Mr W. A. Rcwse, in opening the bazaar, congratulated the workers and said he hoped the financial results would be satisfactory. There were stalls for work, sweets, cakes, and vegetables. The fair was held in the Agricultural and Pastoral Hall, which was decorated. In the evening a musical programme was given by Miss Rogers and her pupils. The arrangements were under the supervision of Ensign Wilkes, and a committee of women. At the weekly meeting of the executive of the Rangiora Unemployment Committee seven new registrations wero received and three applications for labour under the No. 4A scheme were granted. On Monday night, members of the Women's Physical Culture Hockey Club held a "back to childhood" party in the Oddfellows' Hall. Games, competitions, and dancing were enjoyed, the winners of the competitions being Misses J. Cook, C. Devlin, T. Edlin, P. Benjes, and D. Payne. A statue waltz was won by Misses M. Meyer and B. Kennedy, and a Monte Carlo waltz was won by Misses D. Tyler and T. Edlin. KAIAPOI The scow Ngahau left Kaiapoi at | midday yesterday with a cargo of 50 tons of potatoes for Wellington, and will call at Kaikoura to take on additional cargo. . WAIPARA At the weekly shoot of the Glenmark Miniature Ride Club the best scores were:—A. A. Thomson 69, M. C. Mowatt 69, W. Goldicn 68, E. P. King 68, J. Harris 68. G. Williams 6ft, J. Cummock 68, G. CULVERDEN The first hare drive of the season in the district in aid of the school funds was held over the Lowry Peaks property. There was a muster of 20 guns, leaving Culverden shortly after 9 o'clock, and not returning until after four in the afternoon. The day was fine and the shooters enjoyed good sport, bagging 74 hares, which were dispatched to Christchurch. Another hare drive has be?n organised for next Saturday, and is to be held over "Island Hills," the property of Mr Shand. The Culverden senior football team met Waiau on the Culverden Domain in the Hurunui Sub-Union competition. Waiau won by G points to 3. Russell scored a try for Culverden. The. referee was Mr Frank Wilson. The Culverden School football team has received a challenge from the Hay/arden School for the Hampson game is to be played on Friday in the school grounds. A girls' basketball team will also come from Hawarden. Mr R. Powell, of the Culverden Post Office staff, has been transferred to Kaiapoi. OXFORD While playing football at the Oxford Consolidated School, Adrian Roberts dislocated an elbow and splintered the bone. In the Coronation Hall, under the auspices of the local branch of the Workers' Educational Association. Mr D. C. Davie gave an address on social credit. Mr P. Fisher, chairman of the County Council, presided, and there was an attendance of 60. A vote of thanks, moved by Mr H. C. D. Somerset, and seconded by Mr L. Watson, was carried. HALS WELL The fourth of a series of socials was held under the supervision of members of the Christchurch Harrier Club, there being a good attendance of visitors. Competitions were won by Mrs Gallagher and Mrs 11. Sparkes, and Mr W. Collins and Mr Braithwaitc. Novelty dances were won by Mr and Mrs N. Bird and Mr and Mrs Williams. Music for the dancing was played by F. Smith's orchestra, with extras by Mr W. Roselor. Messrs F. Wilhelm, H. Hayes, and T. Wilhelm were masters of ceremonies. SEDGEMERE The attendance at the third of a series of socials held by the Sedge-mere-Lakeside Miniature Rifle Club was easily the best yet recorded. Improvements effected at the Sedgemere Hall made the building more comfortable for the card players. Those most successful at cards were Mrs W. Marsh and Mr A. C. Greenwood, and Mrs C. H. Morton and Mr J. Barton. Supper was provided by the club and served by the women, and dance music was supplied by Mrs R. Lambie and Mr A. Lambie. Mr P. Marsh was master of ceremonies. SPRINGSTON SOUTH The monthly meeting of the Springston South Ladies' Guild was held at the home of Mrs F. Graves. A competition for the best knitted or crocheted article made from two skeins of wool, was won by Mrs F. Greaves with Miss A. Quayle second. Dance music was played by Miss Molly Riordan, Mrs P. Riordan, and Miss Hazel Greaves. DARFIELD The monthly meeting of the Darfleld branch of the Mothers' Union was held in the Memorial Hall. Mrs Moffatt presided over a good attendance. Visitors were present from Sheffield and Kirwee. The service was opened by the Rev. A. S. Moffatt. The Rev. G. Dent, of Halkett, gave an address on a portion of the mothers' union prayer. A meeting of the Darfleld croquet committee was well attended, Mrs H. Barker presiding. Mrs J. R. Cullen offered her home for a meeting of the women interested in the ball to be held on August 10. The annual meeting was fixed for the first Friday in September. There was an exceptionally large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Darfleld branch of the Presbyter» lan Women's Missionary Union, which was held In the church. The Rev. T. Paterson presided. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs Mac Gibbon, the Presbyterian Association president from Christchurch, who gave an interesting lecture on the meaning of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union and its work. present from the Sheffield branch. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs D. Gillanders and Miss J. Gillanders. SOUTHBRIDGE On the occasion of a visit to Mr J. Moorhead's "Willesden" estate, the boys taking the farm course at the district high school were shown the work carried out since their previous visit. Paddocks sown in crop were inspected and the reasons for crutchipg sheep were explained. "Dopiness" in ewes and the treatment were explained by Mr Jvloorhead, grass and clover paddocks were inspected, and ploughing and other operations were discussed. One of the most interesting subjects dealt with wgs the crop rotation, and interesting plans and re T cords were obtained for future perusal. Mr Moorhead was warmly thanked for his interest in the boys.
