ASHBURTON PERSONAL A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr J. W. Sturgeon, a pioneer settler of the Greenstreet district, was passed at a meeting of the Greenstreet School Committee on Monday evening. Longbeach Road Board The monthly meeting of the Longbeach Road Board was held yesterday, Mr J. P. McQuilkin presiding. The financial statement showed that there was a credit balance of £2tU 7s 4d, with £BB 10s in subsidies to be received from, the Unemployment Board. . , Catholic Club There was a large attendance at the weeklv meeting of the Ashburton Catholic Club on Monday evening. The president, Mr J. Brown, presided. Games were played and a ping-pong tournament was held. An invitation from St. Stephen's Literary and Social Club to a debate was accepted. Druids' Lodge The Success of Ashburton Lodge, U A 0.D., met on Monday evening, the A.D. Sister B. Wallis, presiding. An invitation was accepted from the Star of Ashburton to attend the next meeting An invitation was also received to attend the opening of a Juvenile lodge in Christchurch on July 24. it was agreed to invite the brothers to a card evening next lodge night. Loyal Tinwald Lodge The Noble Grand (Sister S. McDowell) presided over the meeting of the Loval Tinwald Lodge on Monday evening. Sick pay amounting to £i 10s was passed for payment. Women s Golf If has been agreed that senior and junior members of the Ashburton Ladies' Golf Club will choose their own partners for a bogey match tomorrow, while third grade players will chosoe partners for a flag match. WINCHMORE The usual fortnightly social evening was held in the Winchmore Hall. The pri7.es, which were given by Mrs J. Bland, were won by Mrs lan Scott and Mr W. King with Mrs W. King and Mr J. J. O'Grady second. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mr J. Bland, jun.. and partner. Music was played by Mac Donald's Orchestra, with extras by Miss Ellen Shearer and Mr Jack Shearer. Mr B. Daly was master of ceremonies.

An enjoyable time was spent by friends of Mr J. Cone at a housewarming party held at his residence Older friends played cards while the younger ones danced and played games. Mr R. Beagle played accordion solos. Amongst those present were Mesdames Scott, Rule, Cook, Drummond, Opie, Misses W. HamiltonDrummond, M. Copland, B. Copland, D. Drummond, A. Callaghan, G. Rowe, K. Cummings, D. Scott.

LYNDHURST The Lyndhurst Old Girls* Basketball Club held its annual ball in the Lyndhurst Hall. Visitors were present from Ashburton, Winchmore, Mcthven, and [Highbank. The hall was decorated with multi-coloured streamers. Musicwas played by Cook's Orchestra, with extras by Miss E. Shearer, Mr K. Cook, and Mr J. Cretncy. Mr A. C. Gadd was master of ceremonies. Mr C. G. Prebble, on behalf of the Basketball Club, welcomed the visitors. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mrs Papps and Mr W. Wright, and a Monte Carlo waltz by Mr Findlay and partner. The cake competition was won by Mr D. Stewart, and the cushion competition by Mr C. Thompson. Among those present were Mesdames W. Cook, W. Drummond, A. C. Gadd, Opie, R. Rule, F. A. Scott, I. Scott, H. Papps, J. Shearer, Misses Rudd, Cumming, Grace Macale, Dorothy Drummond, Nancy Smith, Edith Reesby, Monica Stack, Thelma Evans, Nilla Brooker, Mabel McDowell, Margaret Cook, Isobel Cretncy, Marjorie Cretney, Beth Shearer, Anna Callaghan, Kitty Scott, Greta Shearer, Ellen Shearer, Norma Gadd, Josephine Miles, Wilson. M. Fleming, A. Johnston, Clarice Fleming, V. Law, Helen Boag, and L. Adams. HINDS The Loyal Hinds Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., held its annual ball in. the hall. There was a very large attendance, including visitors from Ashburton and surrounding districts. The hall was decorated with coloured streamers and greenery. The Stroller's orchestra (Ashburton) played the music, and extras were played by Miss A. Morris. The grand mardh, was led by Bro. R. Johnston and Miss P. Wilson. Novelty dances were won as follows:—Monte Carlo, one-step, Mr F. Ownsworth and Miss P. Wilson; Monte Carlo waltz, Mr J. Farrell and Miss A. Madden. Bro. A. Elms was master of ceremonies. The school committee held its fortnightly euchre tournament in the school. There was a very good attendance. The prizes were won by Mrs C. Elms and Mr J. Elms. The weekly shoot of the Miniature Rifle Club was held on Monday night. A trophy, given by Messrs Bennett and Walls was competed for. The following were the highest scores off the rifle:—R. McKeage 78, A. Ellis 78, H. Watson 78, W. Hawke 77, M. McInnes 74, D. Watson 74, F. Rickard 72, R. Reddecliffe 70, and A. Sim 70. In the shoot-off for the hotty button, R. McKeage and H. Watson tied with 76. The next shoot-off will be held next night.

LYNNFORD The following wore the scores at the weekly match of the Lynnford Miniature Rifle Club:—N. Bauerle 80, F. Morriss 79, L. Dell 79, A. Lamont 78, J. Bishop 75, W. Chisnall 74, S. Johnston 73, L. Noble 72, H. Symns 73, M. Dollar 69, E. Bishop 66, J. Manson 63, H. Painter 59; S. Chisnall 55, and A. Painter 43. The senior hotty button was won by N. Bauerle, and the junior by W. Chisnall. Seven tied and the shoot-off resulted:—H. Symns (15), 72, 72, 1; S. Johnston (10), 74, 69, 2. The following team will represent the dub for the second Cass Cup shoot, to be fired at Willowby on Monday next:—N. Bauerle, L. Dell, F. Morriss, J. Bishop, A. Lamont, C. Dell, R. Johnston, L. Noble, N. Mcintosh, H. Symns, M. Dollar, and W. Chisnall. METHVEN The annual meeting of members of the Mcthven Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held in the Town Hall on Monday evening, Mr Alex Geddes presiding over a large attendance. The report and balancesheet were adopted. A large number of donations were received for the special prize fund. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr Geo. Callaghan; vice-president, Mr Geo. Kelly; hon. treasurer, Mr H. Green (re-elected); committee, Messrs Geo. Geddes. J. F. Ruddenklau, C. H. Watson, A. A. McLeod, S. Campbell, A. M. Hart, Jos.
