CHRISTCHURCH MILK SUPPLY

to tkb editor or mz PEESS. Sir,—lt is rather a surprising shock to leam from the letters of "Interested" and "Poorman" that the milk vendors and producers are classed among the unscrupulous rich. Well, well, miracles never have, and never will, cease to function. "Poorman" describes the dairymen as being avaricious, and proceeds to substantiate this accusation with absurdly incorrect figures. According to his opaque method of reckoning, if a dairyman sell 3 20 gallons of milk in the city at Is a gallon, then he receives £1 a day clear profit. All very methodical, but first of all, it would be far wiser to deduct 6d from every Khillinjr' for price of milk paid to the ( producer. This will leave 10s a day' or £3 10s a week. Having borne this Well in mind, let us deduct also the| rent money, the price of maintaining the delivery vehicle and sundry other things connected with milk rounds, not forgetting the burden of overdue debts. This is the real position of the vendor 1 to-day, and, believe me, the producer » in no better position. Also "Poorman" quotes the sales of 20 pints of cream a day. How ignorant he is, and how the dairymen must have chuckled over this fault! A vendor who possesses a 20-gallon milk round would be more than lucky if he sold a pint of cream a day; even upon Sunday, he could not sell two and a half gallons of cream upon such a small round. "Interested" describes milk as being a luxury. Probably he is entitled to his own misguided ideas, yet, I smile when I think of his endeavouring to «o without milk ' It cannot be done, for milk is the greatest, most essential, body builder obtainable. This letter is a direct challenge to "Poorman' and "Interested" —a challenge to better this argument, and any Wence upon their parts will be acknowledged as defeat. —Yours, etc., 5 „ EL CAPITANE. .
