CRACKER, NOT KARAKA CREEK

TO Till! EOITOII OF Till! I'iiESS. Sir,—Mr Bcthcll is quite correct as regards the.name of this creek. More than 50 years ago flax was plentiful there, and, as he states, was supposed by teamsters to be superior for crackers for whips. My father, Dr. Morris, used to cut a bit of flax from there when passing for that purpose, and he told me that was the reason for the name. I have seen the drivers of Murray Forks waggons stripping and plaiting their crackers between there and Waikari.—Yours, etc,, G, S. MORRIS. Lyttelton, June 23. 1934.
