Woods), members of ,the borough council, the chairman ol the couhty council (Mr D. J. Morrow), members of the county council, representatives of the' Ashburton Hospital Board; Ashburton branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, Ashburton Returned Soldiers' Club,; Ashburton War Relief Fund Copimittee. and Ashburton No-License Council. There was an attendance of about 460. Mr Petrie'took as his text, "Hpnour all men, love the brotherhood, fear God, and honour the King." He said that Mr Ferriman had lived tip 7 to those ideals with practical generosity and sympathy; simple Christian faith, and enthusiasm for what be believed to be right. "He has been a unique character in our midst," said Mr Petrie, "and was' truly a great heart. He gave himself to public interests in Ashburton, and not only in Ashburton but also in New Zealand and even the world. He showed his love for his fellow-men and country in a practical sense. His interest in returned soldiers was revealed in all he did for them. Nor did he limit is beneficence to the returned man—many homes whom he helped in Ashburton would know that."

Strangers visiting the town were accustomed to meeting him on the streets. He had taken them in, in many cases keeping them until he found employment for them. He could not have done so mucii without the help of Mrs Ferriman, who was a noble and self-sacrificing woman. Mr Ferriman was a most active member of the church, and although several things happened to which he wag opposed, he remained loyal and steadfastly consistent in all his actions. < To everything concerning Christianity he was generous, even assisting other churches financially. There was a great lesson to be learnt from his life work, Mr Petrie read a telegram received from Mr J. M. Murray, secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, stating that the alliance was grateful for the privilege of comradeship with such a fceli-sacrificfng and noble personality as Mr Ferriman. • J ; c - Thompson sang "O Rest in the Lord, from "Elijah."
