SYNTHETIC RUBBER

AN AMERICAN INVENTION (Received June 22, 9.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 21. The first American synthetic rubber motor-car tyres, which look like real rubber and wear fully as well, were announced at Wilmington, Delaware, today. They are described as a safeguard against excessive rubber prices and a guarantee of American rubber independence in war time. Synthetic rubber now costs about a dollar a pound, compared with 15 cents for foreign real rubber. Synthetic rubber is made of acetylene, salt, and water. [America's dependence on other countries for rubber supplies has long been a source of anxiety for her, and much money has been spent in. research aimed at finding a substitute. Many of the investigators have tried to produce rubber from other plants.] AMERICAN ARMY FLIGHT PLANNED WASHINGTON TO FAIRBANKS (Received June 22, 9.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 21. A mass flight of 10 fast army Martin bombing aeroplanes from Washington to Fairbanks, Alaska —one of the most strenuous formation manoeuvres undertaken by the Army Air Corps, will take place in July. The flight will be made in seven stages, the round trip distance being 7334 miles. It is regarded in some quarters as presaging the establishment of a series of military aviation stations throughout Alaska, as well as the development of commercial air fields between the Canadian border and Fairbanks and Nome.
