SCHOOL CHILDREN'S MILK ; It has not yet been possible to make arrangements for obtaining the supply oE free milk for necessitous school children made possible by the gift of the necessary money by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.). It is desired that the milk shall be delivered in separate bottles l'or the children and it appears that there is difficulty in the milk vendors securing a sufficiency of these. Returned Soldiers' Association The billiards and snooker tournament arranged by the social and billiards committee this week, when the members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade were the guests of the club, resulted in the hosts securing the higher number of points at both games. The games resulted: —Snooker —Fire Brigade 170 points, Returned Soldiers' Association 327. Billiards—Fire Brigade 421 points, Returned Soldiers' Association 578. Social Evenings - The bowling club's whist tournament resulted:—Highest score, Miss C. Mazey; highest score by woman, Mrs W. Carmalt; highest score by man, Mr L. W. Besley. After playing regu-
larly for period of two years without winning, Mr L. W. Besley has now won each week for the last three weeks. At the weekly euchre tournament in aid of the funds of the school committee the winners were Mesdames C. Johnstone, J. Cattermole, and .H. Hanna, and Messrs N. Campbell, J. Marriott, and J. R. Hurrell. Special prizes were won by Mrs W. Philpott and Mr P. Miller. Ladies' Hockey The New Brighton hockey teams for to-day are as follows: Senior B, v. Digby's, at New Brighton, at 3'p.m. (Mr Hurrell) —A. Moses, B. Cook, M. Turner, I. Donohue, E. Brunton, J. Lattimore, P. Sutton, R. Masservey, M. Moses, D. Hanley, and Rhona Cochrane. Junior B A, v. Redcliffs, at Hagley No. 9, at 3 p.m. (Mr J. H. Jones)—E. Peters, N. Wroth, E. Hall, F. Masservey, J. Mills, J. Fisher, E. Yole, C. Inglis, F. Miller, E. Davy, and V. Hill. The A team will meet at the Band Hall at 2.15 p.m. Personal The sub-committee appointed by the District High School Commissioner (Mrs M. Moses and Messrs L. R. Hurrell, J. Cattermole, and W. F. Larcombe) are arranging a welcome in the Parish Hall in honour of the new headmaster, Mr F. W. Moore. The date has been tentatively fixed for the first Thursday in July. Mr W. G. Holloway, .assistant town clerk of Eastbourne, will arrive in the borough this morning and will spend the week-end with his parents, Mr and Mrs R. E. Holloway. Rugby Football Enthusiasts will have an opportunity of seeing the New Brighton third grade team play the District High School team in the Rawhiti Domain this afternoon.
Women's Christian Temperance Union The monthly meeting of the New Brighton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Methodist Schoolroom on Thursday afternoon. Mrs H. M. Hall (president) presided over a fair attendance of members. In the scientific
temperance fact read by the secretajy it was stated that the Women's Christian Temperance Union in South Africa was doing excellent work in getting the grapes used as raisins instead of in the manufacture of wine. Arrangements were completed for the birthday social on June 27. It was decided to hold a special meeting on August 7, when Mrs B. H. Low, superintendent of the "peace" departmfiht, would give an address. Messages of optimism were read by the members and solos were sung-by Miss L. Sincock and Mrs Fitzgerald. NORTH BEACH Personal Mr and Mrs J. Taylor (Beach road), who have been visiting the Hawkes Bay district for the last six weeks, have returned home. North Beach School Through the assistance of the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), the North Beach School Committee has been enabled to provide hot milk for the scholars during the winter months. The milk is supplied at midday and is free to all scholars. Children who go home to lunch can have the milk before they leave the school. More than 120 children are supplied daily. Basketball An A grade competition match was played yesterday afternoon in the school grounds, between the North Linwood and North Beach Schools. The North Linwood team won by 22 to 8. Influenza The attendance at the North Beach School has been seriously affected by the prevalence of influenza. Several of the staff have also been away. Memorial Hall The unsightly structure erected underneath the hall has been removed and is being replaced with storage rooms and seating accommodation for the public. Heating the Hall The attendance at several of the gatherings at the hall has been affected recently by the extreme cold. A® experiment in the way of heating will be tried at the flag 500 on TuesdayIf this is successful efforts will he made to have proper heating apparatus installed.
