GOOD PROSPECTS FOR SUVA
PUBLIC WORKS PROGRAMME (Received June 22, 5.5 p.m.) SUVA, June 22. Opening the Legislative Council, the Governor, Sir Murchison Fletchef announced that the Secretary of S-ats (Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister) hr.d approved of loans of £295,000 public works in the colony, including new government offices and roads, and the Rewa bridge. The reserves of the colony amount to £309,000. Quota legislation on cotton and on artificial silk piece goods to protact the British manufacturer would introduced. In the opinion of the Governor, the colony's prospects w ? r e good. Their sugar crop promised well—prices ruling, were higher. The coconut yield was particularly plentiful, and although prices were low, banana exports ana prices v/ere steady. Gold prospects were favourable, and there were prospects of the tourist busies expanding.
