Captain Angus (Greymouth) has arrived in Christchurch and will leave for Sydney on a business trip. The Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, M.L.C., arrived from Wellington by the Wahine yesterday morning. Mr W. G. K. Wright, of Wellington, has been appointed a local director of the Phoenix Assurance Company, Ltd.
Sir George Mason Allard, president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, arrived at Auckland by the Wanganella on Tuesday.
Mr J. R. Templin, consulting electrical engineer to the Heathcote County Council, was granted leave of absence by the council at its meeting last night from June 24, 1934, to January, 1935. as he proposes to make a trip abroad.
Mr A. C. Cottrell has been elected to the Directorate of the Christchurch Building and Land Society (permanent) in place of Mr Joseph Wallace, whose death occurred recently. Mr Cottrell is a member of the legal firm of Joynt, Andrews and Cottrell, and is well known in business circles.
The Canterbury Education Board yesterday decided to forward a letter to Dr. C. E. Beeby congratulating him on his appointment as executive officer of the New Zealand Council for Educational Research. The chairman (Mr W. P. Spencer) and Mr S. R. Evison referred to Dr. Beeby's success in eulogistic terms. Dr. Beeby, who is a member of the Christchurch Boys' Employment Committee, was congratulated by members of the committee at a meeting held last evening.
In the list of promotions recently announced in the London Gazette was that of Pilot Officer C. Broughton, promoted to flying officer. Flying Officer C. Broughton, who is the only son of Mr C. Broughton Fendalton, entered the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, in 1930, and after two years' study and training gained a commission. After leaving Cranwell he was stationed at Hornchurch for a short period and was then sent to India, where he is at present stationed. He received his education at the Shirley School and the Boys' High School, Christchurch.
Mr E. N. Beilby, architect to the city of Melbourne, arrived at Auckland by the Wanganella on Tuesday • to spend a holiday in the Dominion, before proceeding to America and England on business. The Rev. H. Leggate, of Manchester, England, delegate to Toe H in New Zealand, who has been visiting Australia, returned by the Wanganella on Tuesday. Mr P. J. Moore, accountant of tha Auckland branch of the Commercial ■Bank of Australia, has been promoted to be manager of the bank's Oamaru branch. Major C. H. Cockram, of the Seventh Ghurka Rifles, who arrived at Auckland by the Wanganella on Tuesday, intends to spend a week in New Zealand before leaving for England for the remainder of his leave. Dr. J. Lewis Reed, who has been closely associated with the Waipawa Hospital, Hawke's Bay, for the last 41 years, has tendered his resignation. Dr. Reed was honorary assistant superintendent and surgeon for 21 years, and has been medical superintendent for the last 20 years.
