RELIEF WORK CAUSEWAY NEARLY COMPLETED OTHER UNDERTAKINGS SUGGESTED The progress being made with the causeway at Redcliffs indicates that this unemployment relief work will be completed before Christmas. It is understood that the work on the Summit road, generally referred to as the Rapaki job, also is nearing an end. Another relief work, the Estuary road, which has given employment to 70 men for nearly two years, also is nearing completion. This last-named ■work has been possible mainly through the generosity of the late Mr George Humphreys. Some Suggested Jobs At present there are 122 men employed on the causeway, and as the work nears completion the number •will diminish. One or two other works, considered suitable as reiiei jobs, have been mentioned. One is the 'completion of the road from Lyttelton to Sumner on the line originally laid down by Captain Joseph Thomas, with some modifications ati the Sumner end. It will be recalled that the committee which recently investigated the improvement of the access from the city to Lyttelton suggested this work as a suitable one as an unemployment relief work. The whole of the work would be within the confines of the borough of Sumner, and the financing of it may present some difficulties, Unless the city and some of the surrounding districts are prepared to assist. The straightening of the lower reaches of the Heathcote river is another work that has been suggested, end it is urged in support of it that it would be of great value in providing a rapid get away for the run, off in heavy rains from the hills, and also in minimising the effect of pollution. The scheme for preventing the flooding of the lands on the banks of Lake Ellesmere also has been mentioned. So far the Government has not indicated whether it is prepared to assist, •with it, though both the Prime Minister and the Minister for Public Works have admitted the desirability of eomething being done.
