WAR AND CHRISTIANITY
TO THE Eonoa OF TUB TEKSS. Sir.—A week ;:yo I attended a very inte'-c-ting oublic lecture, given by Dr. Norwood, of the City Temple. London, on "Peace or War—The p ™ s P e< r;; Tfe coeakT exhorted all Christian people to do their best to outlaw war. It occurred to me while him that it was an unholy disgrace '.hat Christians often of the very sam church were slaughtering eaeh _ other because some finarciers and p , am had made a mess of things caused by their own selfishness. lam that the people do not listen to the Voice Divine first, before heeding the dictates of selfish money-grubbers otherwise aU Christians would be guided bv what their church says. _ Could not the Pope, therefore, being the prime bishop of Christendom, nave telared that war is contrary to tne example and law of the Prince of Peace, and that no members of h is church shall take up arms? Then 'he Patriarch of Constantinople could ■ tebid all Eastern Orthodox Christians to fight. After this the Archbishop Canterbury, as head of the Anglican Communion, could likewise forbid his church to fight, and then the larger foe church could have followed suit, •hen only the people who wanted the War would be left to fight it out, and &U this demoralising denression might »ot have been here to-day to ruin the chances of us young folk who were ; jg the cradle at the commencement of Great War. —Yours, etc.,
