*— NEW TRAM STOP Work has begun on the construction of a new tram stop at Pratt street, and owing to the trams in future not being obliged to stop on the corner, there should be less danger of an accident through the constant motor traffic. The existing rubble wall separating the small beach from the road will be removed, and a plot of adequate si will be provided by the use of rock which has already been quarried and dumped there. A stone shelter will be erected with seating accommodation so arranged that there will be shelter from east and south-west winds. Bowling The Sumner Bowling Club's competitions next season will be the same as last year's, but there will be a.Quer-ent-method of playing them. Winners will play winners, and losers will play losers. • Forensic Club Mr R. C. Hamilton presided over the weekly meeting of the Sumner Forensic Club, when the subjects under discussion were as follows: "That the greatest contribution to human progress has been made by: (a) Philosophy, the Rev. W. R. Martin; (b) Science, Mr J. A. Rhodes; (c) Arts, Mr H. G. Bailey. The Rev. W. R. Martin, in his address, showed how a study of philosophy is aiding man to understand his own complex nature, with the result that life's greatest aim of gaining complete happiness is the more easily attainable. Mr J. A. Rhodes submitted a survey of the advance of science, with the resultant benefits to mankind, and of the great names in the records of scientific progress, providing concrete examples in support of his contentions. An address was delivered on the Arts by Mr H. G. Bailey, who contended that without the finer arts the
world would be lifeless and without soul. In his opinion, neither science nor philosophy became practicable without applications of the arts in some form or other. Next week, "Ladies' Night" will be held in Haase's tea rooms. The subject will be "That the Tramway Board is Justified in Striking a Rate to Meet Annual Deficiencies." The speakers will be Messrs J. S. Barr, Douglas Smith, T. Auton, and A. W. Jamieson. Hockey Owing to several resignations each team in this afternoon's games will be one player short. At 6 o'clock numbers of happy children sat down to a tempting tea provided by the women, and at 7.30, a public meeting, followed by a social, was held. The Rev. T. J. Wallis was in the chair, and a report on the year's working was presented by the secretary, Mr A. Newport. The report said that the church was fortunate in securing Mr Wallis to fill the Rev. R. E. Patchett's place. The financial position of the church was sound, in spite of the yearly payment of £3O 10s being more than under the old mortgage conditions. At the beginning of the year there was a debit balance of £57, which had been reduced to £33, making an improvement of £24. The spiritual tone of the church was gratifying, and thanks were due to those wjio had taken part in the church work, especially the local preachers and organists. The ladies' guild had worked unceasingly during the year, and was especially to be thanked for its work in keeping the church clean and in looking after the floral decorations. A social was held after the meeting, items being given by the following:—Recitation. Miss M. Hollobon; songs, Mr G. Brown: trio, Mrs Duff and Misses Duff; recitation, Mrs Gilbert.
