FANCIERS' SHOW

ASHBURTON SOCIETY RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED The features of the annual show of the Ashburton Fanciers' Society, which was opened yesterday, were the poultry, fancy work, and vegetables. There was also an improvement in the standard of cookery compared with the last two years. In the poultry classes, which attracted a wide range of birds, the judge had a difficult task in making the final selection in many cases. The entries, which totalled 1175, were a record for the show, being 36 more than last year's figures and 73 more than in 1932. The increase was in the poultry section. There is a wide selection of vegetables, which are attractively set out in the centre of the building. The Zouch Cup for the best bird m the show was won by T. Rattray, who also won the South Island Poultry Pigeon and Canary Association's championship for the best utility barred Plymouth Rock. The same bird won both trophies, and has an unbeaten record. The Davis Memorial Cup for the best cockerel or pullet in the show was won by F. C. Hack with a Silver Wyandotte pullet. G. H. Nicoll won the Peter Donald Memorial Cup for the best Black Orpington for the third time in succession with a hen. The D. G. Smith Cup for the best cock canary in the show went to W. H. Walker, for the second year in succession. The South Island Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Association's championship for the best Old English black, red, or light red game bantam was won by A. Morris, with a cock bird. The most successful exhibitor in the grain, seeds, and vegetables classes was F. South, who won the following special prizes:—David Jones Cup for most points in sections 1, 2, and 3, most points in turnips, mangolds, carrots, celery, pumpkins, . cauliflower, cabbage, silver beet, curly kale, wheat, oats, and grass-seed. A. J. Breakwell obtained most points in potatoes and roots, while W. J. Moses obtained most points in garden produce, onions, shallots, beet, and parsnips. The selection of N. S. Brosnan's Cocker Spaniel bitch, champion Renwick Tangle, as the best dog in the show was popularly received. Mrs R. Y. White's English Setter, Bracken of Beechwood, won the women's bracelet. The entries for this year compared with those of last year were as follows: 1934. 1933. Winter Show section ..
