THK NEW WAITAKI The Union Company's new steamer Waitaki was expected to arrive at Bluff yesterday on her maiden trip from Swansea, via Safaja and South Australian ports. TFIE OPAWA The Federal Company's Opawa, which left Liverpool on June 9 for Auckland, sailed from Dakar on Sunday last. She is due at Auckland on July 18, and will then visit Wellington, Lyttelton. Dunedin. and New Plymouth. NEW SOVIET SERVICES The Soviet Government is to establish seven new shipping services during the present year. In the Black Sea trade, three motor-ships of 5400 tons d\v. each will serve United States ports, and four ships of between 3000 and 5000 tons will provide fortnightly sailings to Hamburg. London will have a monthly service with two ships of the same size, and three smaller vessels will sail to Genoa and Marseilles. There will also be three regular services between Leningrad and Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Stockholm respectively. CONTINENTAL PORT TRAFFIC Returns of shipping traffic at the three principal North Continental ports during the first three months of this year show a decided improvement over the corresponding period of last year. At Hamburg, 3931 vessels of 4,364,900 tons net arrived during the quarter compared with 4078 of 4,234,534 tons a .Vear ago: at Antwerp the figures were 2418 of 4.192,288 tons, against 2307 ol 4,174,564 tons; at the New Waterway they were 3080 of 4,803,131 tons, and 2787 of 4,451.461 tons respectively; and at Rotterdam, 2637 of 4,081,349 tons and 2319 of 3,527,512 tons. NGAHAU AT WELLINGTON The scow Ngahau. which left Kaiapoi on Saturday night with a cargo of potatoes and onions for Wellington, is reported to have arrived at Wellington yesterday. Heavy seas compelled the Ngahau to shelter at Kaikoura for several days. TUSCAN STAR DELAYED Heavy rain at Napier on Wednesday prevented loading operations being started on the Tuscan Star. After leavj ing Napier she will complete loading at Gisborne and Auckland, sailing on ! July 4 for London.
