RUGBY WAIMATE beats south ! CANTERBURY A CLOSE MATCH (rRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGIIAM.) WAIMATE, June 21. A representative game was played jetween Waimate and South Canterbury at Waimate to-day, ending in a vin for the home team by 9 points to 6 The visitors were much heavier than the local team both in the for-v-ards and backs. For the greater part '• tbP tame the South Canterbury
0 i the game ouucu bpeks showed much more dash, and w for the good dciensive play of Waimate the visitors would have been over more than once. Granger at full-back for Waimate was in great form and saved his team ; D eatedly. In the first half neither line was crossed, but the visitors were penalised twice, and Martyn, with niperb kicks, made Waimate's score 6 while Seaton kicked a good goal for liic visitors, the half-time score being, Waimate 6, South Canterbury 3. ' On the resumption of play Waimate attacked for a while, and an infringement by the visitors saw Martyn again kick a beautiful goal. Several passjn« rushes by the visitors followed, irom one of which Ilorrison scored at the corner. Seaton failed to convert. Despite repeated efforts, the visitors failed to increase the score, the local team putting up a solid defence. All the Waimate backs played sound g £ jnes, Thompson at half being particularly prominent. Both packs of forwards worked well on the day's
play. The visitors' back division was a superior combination to that of the local team. Mr J. K. Clarke was the referee. WATCHES FOR TO-MORROW CHRISTCIIURCH V. ALBION Following on Albion's success in beating Old Boys last Saturday, the side's second game with Christchurch is causing interest. In the first match of the season between these two teams Albion won by 17 to 0, and Christchurch is keen to avenge this defeat. The Albion forwards are very good in the loose and the rearguard is now combining much better. On the other hand Christchurch will prove a stumbling block for some o£ the teams in this round for the backs have improved a great deal. On the south grounu, Linwood will meet Sydenham, and Merivalc will play Athletic at Sunnyside. A good game should be witnessed at Rugby Park, where Old Boys play University, and this promises to be a very fast and open game. TEAMS FOR TO-MORROW CJIKISTCHURCH CLIP. 1 1 I'irst, Grade v. Doth teams possess young and virile players who know the art of fool foal] that is essential in cup-tic Karnes. Western will field a strong team, and the fame should resolve itself • into a pitched battle between forwards and half-backs, as these appear to be the strongest positions in both teams. Technical at full strength is capable of defeating Western, but the Western men arc known as great cup lighters. Patrons can be assured of a good game of football. TEAMS FOR TO-MORROW ST.
