LOAN NOT UNDER CONSIDERATION

i I ! .MINISTER'S STATEMENT j i I ! i ' (rness association tei.euram.) WELLINGTON, June 1. j : Great interest was aroused over the : ; reported references by the Minister • for Employment (the Hon. Adam ! Hamilton) when in Auckland recently I i regarding the possibility of. extending .'the Unemployment Board's resources i by loan money, but in an interview ! this evening the Minister said the in- ■ lerence drawn from his remarks was 1 not warranted. There had been some , misconception over the matter. The only explanation of the origin of the report was that during cross-talk with \ a member of the deputation, who ad- ■: vocated some form of free credit, he made the general comment that it I meant borrowing. i "I want to make it clear," said Mr j Hamilton, "that I did not intend to i convey the impression that the Gov- | crnment was seriously considering financing unemployment relief through I loans." ' YOUTH EDUCATION i A COMI'ILSOKV SCHEME ! SUGGESTED j Recommendations for the compulsory j registration and educalion of youths, made by the appointments committee, were adopted without discussion at a meeting of the Christchureh Technical College Board of Governors last night, i They were as follows: —■ j Thrt the board continue to place all j possible educational facilities at the I disposal of young persons who arc un- | employed, including the provision of j free books where possible for necessii tons students. ! That the board reaffirm its decision ! of last year that it was of the opinion j that voluntary effort was insufficient to deal with juvenile unemployment. ! Tlie board had considered the sugj gestions in the report made to the Cabinet by Messrs S.G.Smith, M.P.. and A. |L\ Ausell. M.l'. The appointments comimittee was gravely concerned with the i indication that there were in Chrisl- ,' church several hundreds of boys who were unemployed and who were not attending any educational institution. In the opinion of the committee some form of compulsory registration of unemployed youths and compulsory eau~ cation for them during the period ot unemployment should be provided for j and enforced by the Government. In the event of steps being taken by the Government the board pledged itself to do its utmost to provide cducaI lional facilities required if the Gov- | crnment gave financial support. | EMPLOYMENT OF OLDER BOYS PAYMENT OK SI H.SIDY SICGE-TEI) '■ WELLINGTON, June 1. After discussion of a report that there ! were 250 Wellington youths between ; 1)i and 20 on the unemployment roll, I and that it was practically impossible > to find positions for them as employers j were disinclined to engage them while younger boys were available, the Wei- • hngton Bovs' Employment Committee i to-day resolved that the Government ! be requested to consider as a matter of i urgenev the following reeommenda- ! lion: '-That the employers of boys bej tween the ages of 18 and 20, inclusive. ! bo granted a subsidy of 1!5 per cent. j on the weekly wages paid, the subsidy j not to exceed 7s (id a week and to be ! restricted to the primary and secondary industries or other productive 1 work to be determined, and to be i granted only in the case of boys who j have been unemployed for six months." ! NUMBER OF HOYS OUT ; OF WORK i j COMMENT 11V WELLINGTON ! COMMITTEE i .I'liti-i association '] i;i.r.o ka::., ; WELLINGTON, June I. ' ■■] do not attach a great deal of imJ portance to the statements made at I Christchureh, and do not accept them ] as the official opinion of the commitI tee," said the chairman of the Weli hngton Boys' Employment Commitj tee (Mr R. 11. Nimmoi, when the com- ! m::tee to-day was considering critic- , ism by a member of the Christchureh i Boys'"Employment Committee rellect- | ing on the registration figures of the j Welli .cton committee. It was stated that the Christchureh committee had I been unable to reconcile the comj parativcly low registration of unem"'eyed boys at Auckland and WellingI ton' with 'the hi"h figure of 900 at ; Christchureh. i Alter discussion, the following resolution was carried: "This committee resolves not to enter hit' any correspondence on the subject of statements made by Mr A. J. McEldownev, of the Christchureh Boys' Employment Committee, but affirms its confidence in the thoroughness of its system and the efficiency of its officers." The figures indicating the position at Wellington represent the actual state of the affairs of youth unemployment in the capital city. Our only regret is I that the Chr ; church committee did not enquire locallv from the WellingI tou committee, and thus secure its in- | formation at first hand." HOOTS EOK RELIEF WOUKEKS j Regarding the distribution of boots to be made this year by the Unemployment Board to relief workers. Mi I R. T. Bailey, officer in charge of the Labour Department in Christchureh, has been informed that a contract hasbeen let for an additional supply of boots.
