BOROUGH COUNCIL As the usual day for holding the | fortnightly meeting of the borough I council will fall on Monday, which will be celebrated as the King's Birth- | day, the meeting will be held on the day following. j Mothers' Union ! The monthly meeting of the St. Faith's branch of the Mothers' Union was held on Thursday. The first portion of the service in the church was conducted by Deaconess Spencer Smith, of St. Faith's House. The address was the final appeal in the "Call to Renewal." At the business part of the meeting, held in the Parish Hall, Mrs T. Robins presided. A number of members expressed their intention of taking part in the annual festival, to be held in the Caledonian Hall, Christchurch, on Wednesday next. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Pearce. Unemployment There is again- a reduction in the number of men employed in the borough under the No. 5 scheme. From 300 Jast week it has dropped to 355 this week. Motor Drivers' Licenses The Borough Council chambers were opened for two hours on Wednesday for the convenience of those wishing to take out motor drivers' licenses. I Forty-eight applications were received | compared with 66 last year. To date, 1231 drivers' licenses have been issued, ! 28 fewer than the number issued up to j the same time in 1933. Catholic School Excellent progress has been made on the new Catholic School building lin Lonsdale street. The premises have [ already been roofed in. Social Evenings The winners at the whist evening held in the Bowling Club's pavilion were Mrs I. Sierby, Mrs R. Smith, and Miss Clara Mazey. The weekly bridge evening arranged by the Croquet Club resulted in Miss C. Mazey and Mrs Dixon securing the highest scores. The committee of the New Brighton District lligh School held its weekly card evening in the schoolroom, there being a good attendance. A competition was won by Mr H. McLaughlan. Prizes were won by Mesdames M. Jackson, G. Cattermole, and J. Phillips, Misses F. W. Larcombe, M. G. Cattermole, and M. M. Campbell. Choir Concert The Shirley Methodist choir visited the New Brighton Methodist Church on Thursday evening, and gave a eoncert in aid of the prize fund for the recent flower show. A musical farce, recitations by L. Marks and E. Palmer, solo and chorus, and a wax-works show were among the items given. Mr J. W. Hull, chairman of the llower show committee, presided and welcomed the party. The Rev, S. Bailey expressed thanks to the party for the visit. Miniature Rilles The New Brighton Miniature Utile Club tired a match against tin- Lyttelton Club on Thursday evening, the match going to New Brighton by 54G points to 544. Scores: New Brighton: P. Personal Miss Merle Dodge, one of the rationed teachers at the New Brighton School, has received her first permanent appointment as teacher in sole charge of the Spenecrville School. Miller, J. Fisher. E. Davie, V. Hill. Traffic Problems The acting-headmaster of the New Brighton District High School (Mr M. Cowan) recently approached the borough council with the suggestion that white lines be marked at convenient places for the crossing of streets by pedestrians. It was thought that a lecture on traffic problems affecting pedestrians and cyclists would assist in safeguarding the school children and arrangements were accordingly made with the borough inspector (Mr F. Blewitt) to give an address to the primary school children. This he did to pupils of Standard 111. and upwards in the school grounds. Mr Blewitt made use of a plan and diagrams, and emphasised a dozen ways of avoiding accidents, ;
