The verdict was popular and the bout was interesting after the third round. Shikina's fall came after a succession of jolts, arm and hip rolls in the fourth round, and Detton's equalising tall came early in the seventh after headlocks, bunts, and jolts had rattled Shikina. The Japanese recovered quickly and after Detton had failed to connect with a flying tackle early in the concluding round, was able to avoid rushes by the American, who did some spectacular diving through the ropes.
