NORTH CANTERBURY
RANGIORA Mr H. A. Bennett, circuit steward, presided at the annual meeting o£ the Rangiora Methodist congregation held in the church school room on Thursday evening. Mr T. F. May, secretary to the trust, presented the annual report and balance-sheet, which were considered most satisfactory. Interest in the work of the church had been well maintained, and the church was becoming too small to seat the large congregations which attended on Sundays. The annual flower show and bazaar held at the end of September had, as usual, proved a success, and showed a credit of more than £74, £6O of which had been placed on deposit in the new church building fund, and the remainder spent in renovating the Southbrook Church. During the year the Rev. S. Henderson had retired on superannuation, and the Rev. T. Coatsworth had been appointed to the circuit, taking up his duties in April. The balance-sheet showed a small debit balance. The chairman congratulated the stewards on the satisfactory report. The Rev. H. Ford, of Woodend, gave a short address, in which he referred to the cordial relations existing between the Rangiora and Woodend congregations. A short addres- was also given by Mr Coatsworth. A programme of songs, recitations, monologues, and violin solos was contributed by Misses Jeane Hanna. Cis. Smith, Horrell, Margarette Stanton, Mr J. C. Hancox. and Messrs Dodge brothers. Accompaniments were played by Messrs A. Lane and W. Maunder. Two quartets were also played by members of the Rangiora Brass Band. George Wallace, the popular Australian comedian, stars as a policeman in the sparkling comedy. "Harmony Row." to be screened at the Rangiora Town Hall this afternoon and to-night. An excellent supporting programme includes a Mickey Mouse cartoon. "The Wayward Canary." At, a special holiday screening on Monday night the principal picture will be "Facing the Music." a comedy with an operatic background in which Stanley Lupino is the principal slat'. Should the day be wet there will be an afternoon showing also. Mr H. Schlutcr had a thumb badly injured yesterday through a horse be was tying up pulling back, lie received medical attention. KAIKOURA There was a good attendance at the weekly amusement evening conducted by the Takaiianga Tennis Club. The winners of prizes were .Mrs F. Hobbs and Mr J. Monk. Struthers, Christehurch, is spending a few days in Cheviot with her brother, Mr G. Struthers. On Thursday afternoon members of the gardening circle of the Cheviot Women's Institute, met at the home of Mrs C. W. Dalgely, Mina. A pleasant afternoon was spent in viewing the garden and the excellent display of chrysanthemums. Afterwards those present were entertained at afternoon tea by Mrs Dalgety. The members of the drama circle of the Cheviot Women's Institute met in the lounge room, Cheviot, on Thursday afternoon to discuss matters connected with the production of a play. Miss I. Struthers, Christehurch, was also in attendance, to assist the performers. It is hoped to stage a programme soon. WAIKARI There was a good attendance at the weekly social in aid of local relief funds, the prize-winners being Mrs O. T. James and Mr R. Fredric. Consolation prizes went to Mrs W. Atkinson and Mr C. L. Suridge, and the special prize to Mr \V. Jane. Messrs A. C. Robilliard, W. A. Ford, and C. Cowles, of Christehurch, visited Waikari during the week and gave a talk on Rugby football to members of the Waikari-Hawarden Football Club iind others interested. Mr H. Inch presided over a good attendance, and in thanking the visitors assured them that their visit was greatly appreciated. There was a fair attendance of residents at u draughts evening held recently in the hall. Mr J. Shadboll played all comers, 19 games in all, winning 18 and losing one, Mr R. Cole being the only player to score a win against him. Tn view of the revival of interest in the game, it was decided to continue such evenings at weekly intervals. Mr A. G, Phipps, of the Waikari postal staff', is on annual leave, and Mr F. J. Pefhig is relieving officer. BALCAIRN There was a record attendance at the fortnightly social on Thursday evening. The proceeds were in aid of the funds of the hall committee. Miss A. Fitzpatrick played the music for the dancing. The prizes for the competitions were won by Mesdames S. Ashworth and G. Day, and Messrs H. Bradbury and G. Day. Mr J. Smith was master of ceremonies. A challenge from Ashley residents to play a cards match in Balcairn on May 9 was accepted.

There was a large attendance at the fortnightly social held in the Peace Hall. Cards were played in the supper room and were followed by dancing to music played by Mrs M. Clarke. The following secured the highest number of points:—Women: Mrs L. W. E. Giles 1, Miss Q. Cross 2; men: Mr R. Hassall 1, Mr S. Mcllrick 2.
HAREWOOD The fortnightly euchre party organised by the Harewood School Committee was well patronised. The successful players were Mrs Claridge, Mrs Webb. Mr Barwell, and Mr Houston. Mrs Broadhurst and Mr King won the consolation prizes. i • AYLESBURY There was an excellent attendance a f , the fortnightly euchre party and dance organised by the Aylesbury School Committee in aid of the school funds. Prize-winners were Misses Harwood and Begg, Messrs J. Cronin and T. Somerfield. Music for the dancing was played by Mesdames G. Begg, F. Johnson, and L. Davis, Misses Begg' ai.d Harwood. Mr H. Walker was master of ceremonies. LINCOLN On the fifty-second anniversary of the Lincoln Presbyterian Church a tea was given in the Lincoln hall and was followed by an enjoyable programme of Scottish and other items given by members of St. Andrew's (Christchurch) Presbyterian choir, under the conductorship of Mr McClean. The items consisted of part-songs by the choir, songs by Miss E. Sinclair (soprano!. Mrs Baker (contralto). Messrs McClean and Wilson (bass), Ford and G. Rawlinson (baritone), and A. Mitchell (tenorl; duets by Misses M. and N. Lill, Messrs Wilson and Ford, and Mr McClean and Mrs Baker, and humorous recitals by Mrs Robb. Mr Mcßae thanked the visitors on behalf of the audience. WEST MELTON The West Melton Saleyards Co.'s sub-committee recently held the third of a series of euchre tournaments in the company's hall. Miss Donaldson won the first, prize for women, and the second was won by Miss Thomson. The first prize for men went to Mr Calder and the second to Mr Watson. Mrs Hayes (piano) and Mr Serra (saxophone) played music for the dance. SOUTHBRIDGE Till.- rainfall recorded at "Waikewai." HORNBY There was a large attendance at the parish hall when lectures were given in the Hornby Ladies' Hockey Club by .Messrs H. Rogers, of the Canterbury Hockey Association, C. Bellamy, and 11. Tcague, of the Canterbury Umpires' Association. Mr H. Rogers also instructed Ihe newly-formed schoolboy.-' team on the liner points of the game. The president, Mrs P. 11. Thomson, thanked the lecturers. The monthly meeting of the Hornby branch of the Mothers' Union was held on Thursday afternoon. Mi's H. Jones presiding over a large attendance. The resignation of Mrs W. Wondelken was received with regret, and the secretary was requested to send her a letter of appreciation in acknowledgment of her services. The "call to renewal" service, which' was attended by tin: combined Templeton, I'rcbbleton. and Hornby branches, was conducted by Sister Evaline in the St. Colutnba Church later in the afternoon. Miss M. Joyce was organist.
