SURREY'S BIG SCORE
475 for Seven Declared SAND HAM'S GREAT INNINGS (UNITED PUKSS ASSOCIATION— BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (Received June 1, 1.25 a.m.) LONDON, May 31. Two of the Surrey batsmen found no difficulty in scoring off the Australian bowlers, and to-day the team carried its overnight score of 372 for three wickets to 475 for seven before declaring. Sandham scored 219 and Gregory 116. The Sandham-Gregory partnership is a record second wicket partnership against an Australian touring team and Sandham's is the only double century against an official Australian team since the war. By lunch tcyday the Australians had scored 24 without losing a wicket. The weather was cloudy, and the wicket good. Brooks, who was sent in as a stopgap overnight, lost his wicket to Wall in the second over. He was both bowled and caught, as the ball touched the bat and removed a bail on its way to Oldfield's gloves. Sandham raised the 400 in 355 minutes, but soon gave an easy catch to Bromley at forward short leg. His innings lasted 365 minutes, and included one six and 22 fours. Barling and Holmes began to thrash the innocuous-looking bowling as Surrey should have done yesterday. They added 58 in 30 minutes before Barling attempted to turn a good length leg break. He was out leg before. When Garland-Wells was bowled by Wall he was attempting a big hit. Holmes declared with the biggest total so far scored against Australia on either this or the previous tour. The innings lasted 400 minutes. The teams were:— Australia: W. M. Woodfull, W. H. Ponsford, E. H. Bromley, D. G. Bradman, A. F. Kippax, S. J. McCabe, A. W. Chipperfield, W. A. Oldfield, W. J. O'Reilly, C. V. Grimmett, and T. W. Wall. Surrey: J. B. Hobbs, A. Sandham, R. J. Gregory, H. S. Squires, T. H. Barling, E. R. T. Holmes, H. M. Gar-land-Wells, P. G. H. Fender, F. R. Brown, E. W. Brooks, and A. R. Gover. Wednesday's Play Wall reopened the attack after lunch on Wednesday. Gregory and Sandham were much brighter than before the adjournment. Sandham cut and drove all bowlers with equal ease. Woodfull rang many bowling changes but the batsmen, on an excellent wicket, went steadily along. Sandham's hundred took 195 minutes. Gregory was missed by O'Reilly in the gully off Wall when he was 90. Gregory then reached his century in 170 minutes. Slogging the bowling, the pair added 50 in 25 minutes after tea. Gilimmstt was taking a heavy share of the punishment before he got Gregory leg-before. Gregory hit 16 fours, and the partnership was worth 242 in 185 minutes. Nearly 20,000 saw Sandham become the highest individual scorer of the tour against the Australians. Pulling Grimmett to the boundary Sandham raised his own 150 and the side's 300 in 265 minutes, but when Sandham was 165 he was badly missed at cover-point by Grimmett, off Chipperfield. Bromley was the sixth bowler. Sandham hit him into the pavilion for a six. Squires was content to score 27 in 60 minutes. His wicket fell 10 minutes before stumps, Chipperfield obtaining a well-deserved success. Brooks held up his end wh'ie Sandham reached 200 in 320 minutes. Surrey's innings at stumps had lasted 325 minutes. Sandham has hit one six and 21 fours. Scores:— SURREY First Innings J. B. Hobbs, lbw, b Grimmett .. 24 A. Sandham, c Bromley, b O'Reilly 219 R. J.
