CANADIAN WHEAT THREATENED
—♦ — GRASSHOPPER PLAGUE WIDE DISTRIBUTION OF POISON BAIT COSTLY OFFENSIVE IN THREE PROVINCES (UNITED ASSOCIATION— BV ELECTBIC TELEGRAPH —COPYBIGHT.) (Received May 27, 8.46 p.m.) | WINNIPEG, May 26. In an effort to fight countless billions of grasshoppers which are threatening approximately 48 per cent, of the wheat yield of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, plans have been made to complete the distribution of poison bait in huge quantities over a 2000 mile front, according to an announcement by the Departments of Agriculture of the three provinces. It is estimated that this will cost 750,000 dollars, the great bulk of which will be spent in Saskatchewan, the hardest-hit province. Hundreds of stations throughout the territory have been established to manufacture and distribute the poison bait, and posters have been printed' outlining methods of checking the pest.
