MISS BATTEN DELAYED
ENGINE TROUBLE DEVELOPS ARRIVAL AT SYDNEY PLANNED FOR MONDAY (Received May 27, 8.40 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 27. Advice has been received in Sydney that because of rain and bad flying conditions Miss Jean Batten abandoned her intention of reaching Charleville to-night and landed "at Blackall". Her engine has developed magneto trouble, and her escort aeroplane has flown the 600 miles to Brisbane to got a new magneto. Miss Batten will be unable to reach Sydney before Wednesday. Speaking by long-distance telephone to Sydney, she said she was elated by her success and overjoyed at the way the Australian people had taken her to their hearts. She had been thrilled when she received telegrams of congratulation from their Majesties, and also from the Governor-General of Australia (Sir Isaac Isaacs) and the Prime Minister of New Zealand (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes). Miss Batten is eliminating Brisbane from her itinerary and will fly to Sydney via Longreach and Bourke. FIANCE'S HELP (Received May 27, 8.15 p.m.) LONDON, May 26. The "Financial Times" says Miss Jean Batten is engaged to a London stock broker who is himself keen on flying. His name is not mentioned. He is said to have equipped her machine with the wings of his aeroplane.
