- » I RANGIORA The celebration of the diamond jubilee of the Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade was commenced yesterday morning, when a church parade was held. Assembling at the Borough Council offices, the parade, headed by the Rangiora Brass Band, under Major W. Smith, and followed by the Mayor (Mr W. A. Rowse) and members and staff of the borough council, members of the Rangiora Fire Brigade, and life members and honorary members, marched through High street to St. John's Anglican Church. Archdeacon A: C. Purchas welcomed the Mayor and councillors and the band, and also congratulated the brigade on attaining,its diamond jubilee and retaining its volunteer spirit during the whole of that time. Mr Purchas described the history of the formation of tire brigades and their relationship to boroughs and commended the volunteer spirit showti. After the service the parade reformed and marched back to the borough council offices, where it was dismissed. Among the visitors present was Mr Albert Tyler, of the West Coast, a former superintendent. The sixtieth anniversary of the Rangiora Methodist Church was celebrated yesterday, when special services were held, conducted by the Kev. T. Coatsworth. All three services were well attended, especially the afternoon service, when the Kaiapoi Methodist choir was present, under the conductorship of Mr A. BlaJke-! ley. Mrs J. H. Blackwell was organist. Vocal solos were given by Mrs Bilcliffe. Miss Thorne, Mr E. Gray, and Mr Mitchell. At the morning service Mr Coatsworth gave an address on the work <>( the church. A solo was given by Mrs R. B. Lane (Auckland). At the evening service Miss T. Ayers, Mr J. Whitchouse, and Miss E. Hamilton wcrs soloists. The address was also given by Mr Coatsworth. Mr A. Lane was organist, and also conducted the choir. KAIAPGI The annual reunion of the Kaiapoi blanch of the Returned Soldiers' Association was held in the Borough Hali, Kaiapoi. on Saturday evening. It uroved most successful, about 150 members and visitors attending. The president of the Kaiapoi branch, Mr J. Gordon, presided. The visitors included Mr B. O. Priddis, representing the Christehurch Returned Soldiers' Association, Mr C. Howe (Rangiora branch), and Mr J. Marsh (New Brighton branch). After the toast of "The King," those present stood in silence as a mark of respect to absent comrades. Mr S. J. Richards proposed the toast of "Local Bodies." which was responded to by Mr J. If. Blackwell, chairman of Waimakariri River Trust, and Mr R. F. Joyce, chairman of the Waimakariri Harbour Board. Ihe toast of "Visiting Associaticr.*" was proposed by Mr' A. Hirst, and responded to by Messrs Priddis, Howe, and Marsh. Other toasts were "Kindred Clubs," proposed by Mr G. Hirst and responded t:> by Mr I£. J. Wright (Kaiapoi Working Men's Club). Mr L. J. Parnham <'Kn»apoi Golf Club;, arid Mr W. McPartlin (Kaiapoi Fire Brigade), and "The Entertainers," proposed by Mr J. Gordon. were given by the Kaiapoi Orchestra under Mr A. Blakcley, and songs by Messrs N. Down, A. Campbell. I!. Fowler, C. James. C. Howe, and J. O'llagen. Mr C. James was the accompanist. The scow Ngaluiu loaded a cargo of 50 tons of potatoes at Kaiapoi on Saturday. and left on the' afternoon tide for Wellington. KAIKOURA Mr R. O'Callaghan, a member of the staff of P.viie, Gould, Guinnes?, Ltd., left on Friday morning to take up a position with the firm at Christchurch. Mr H. Hayward presided over a meeting of the committee of the Kaikoura Miniature Rifle Club, held on Friday evening. Mondays and Fridays were the nights fixed for shooting. The armourer reported that the rifles had been tested and found to be sighting correctly. * WAIKARI The Waikari branch of the Red Cross Society held its monthly meeting recently, Mrs B. L. Blunden presiding over a small attendance. A vote of condolence with Lady Wigram was passed. A large parcel of completed garments was packed for dispatch to the central depot in Christchurch. The necessity for maintaining every effort to assist those in distress during the current winter was emphasised, and it was decided to arrange a clothes drive. At the weekly euchre party to assist local relief funds the prize-winners were Mrs D-. Darroeh and Ml- R. MeCreanor. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs C. Green and Mr W. Cunningham. The prize in a special competition was won by Mr W. Cunningham. Cold and squally weather was experienced in Waikari on Friday, bringing 21 points of rain. The weather cleared in the evening, and there was a sharp frost. OXFORD The town hall was crowded on Friday evening, when the Oxford branch of the Plunket Society held its annual ball. The hall was tastefully decorated with gold and bronze chrysanthemums and autumn foliage. The committee responsible for the arrangements was Mesdames W. J. Skurr (president), A. There was a good array of produce; and the public responded liberally. Guessing competitions were held, the winners being as follows: — Large box of chocolates, Miss E. M. Lelievre; dinner, Mrs W. A. Newton: knitted rabbit. John Williamson; table cloth, P. G. Riches: small box of chocolates, A. Westlake.
COOPER'S CREEK On Wednesday night the fortnightly j euchre and dance was held in the Cooper's Creek Hall in aid of the hall renovating fund. The woman's euchre prizes were won by Miss J. McCahon (Oxford) and Mrs J. Proffitt, and the men's by Mr Harley Marsh and Mr Gus Mehrtens (Oxford). A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr H. Bunn and Mrs R. E. Johnson (Oxford). The beginning of the M.onte Carlo competition was held, Mr M. Adams and Mrs A. Proffitt and Mr Cliff. Bowman and Miss Alvine Proffitt being the last two couples on the floor. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs G. Mehrtens. Extras were played by Mrs A. Marsh and Misses N. Harris and I. Lilly. Mr Kinder Bowman was the master of ceremonies. PREBBLETON The annual meeting of the Prebbleton branch of the Mothers' Union was held in the parish hall on Friday afternoon, after the church service, which was conducted by the vicar. Mrs Hubert Jones presided at the meeting. Motions of sympathy with Mr:; A. Bennett in her illness and with Mr G. Smith in Ihe death of his wife were passed. Graham presided over a meeting of the Ellesmere Gun Club, at which a letter was received from Mr J. Connolly. M.P., accepting office as one of the patrons and enclosing a donation of one guinea. Arrangements were made to meet members of the Methven Gun Club to discuss arrangements for the New Zealand championships, to bo held 011 the Ellesmere Club's ground in August, under the joint auspices of the Methven and Ellesmere clubs. On account of leaving the district Mr S. M. Jackman tendered his resignation ns a member of the club, which was accepted with regret. It was decided to make a presentation to Mr Jackman in recognition of his interest in the club over a number of years. Trophies offered by Messrs L. Chambers, J. Winchester, I. Mawson. and S. M. Jackman were accepted with thanks. The secretary reported that an order had been placed for an automatic puller for the livebird trap, and it would be delivered early in June, when it would be possible to proceed with improvements to the grounds in view of the championships. The Magistrate's Court at Lecston was occupied all day on Friday hearing further evidence in a civil action by A. Cridge (Mr A. S. Lyons) against R. Barnett and E. M. Barnett, trustees in the estate of the late G. H. Barnett (Mr A. A. G. Reed). The claim, which was partly heard on the previous court day, was for £B3 19s 6d, balance said to be due for work done on behalf of the late G. H. Barnett. After hearing the evidence the magistrate, Mr H. A. Young, reserved his decision.
SOUTHBRIDGE At a social held by St. James's Young People's Club there was a good attendance and a pleasant evening was spent. Music for dancing was played by Messrs. J. Moorhead and D. Montgomery, and Misses M. Clements and J. Beamsley. Statue dances were won by Miss R. Howson and Mr L.'Hall, and Miss C. Hickman and Mr F. Greenwood, and a Monte Carlo by Mr L. Hintz and partner. Members' wives and their women friends were entertained at a women's night by the Old Oak Lodge of Druids, at which there was an attendance of about 100. A concert party organised and brought out by Mr W. H. Jones, of Perseverance Lodge, Christchurch, gave many excellent items between the dances. The performers were Miss Grigor, and Messrs J. Smith, F. Alleyne, W. Bell, Thompson, Savage, and Cummings. Mr R. J. Nicholson, who was accompanist, also played for the dancing. The Arch Druid, Bro. R. F. Pilkington, thanked the concert party and Mr Jones, on behalf of Old Oak and the women present, and Mr J. Cummings replied. SOUTHBROOK-FLAXTON The monthly meeting of the South-brook-Flaxton branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held recently in the Southbrook Hall. Mrs Rainey presided over a fair attendance. It was arranged to hold a social evening early in June in the Southbrook Coronation Hall, to raise funds for the branch. Miss Hollow (Rangiora) gave an interesting talk of her travels abroad. Hostesses were Mrs Tulley and the Misses K. Mcintosh, P. Rainey, and M. Stevenson.
