PERFECT WEATHER
SCORING GOOD IN CLUB MATCHES
The weather through the week-end was as nearly perfect as it could be for golf, and scores at most clubs reflected the excellent conditions. All courses are now playing in true winter form, and the bright days allowed the game to be played at its best. C. Holdsworth, this time with Miss E. Nutt, had another win on Saturday, when he arid his partner took the G. E. Rhodes cup, a mixed foursome flag match, at Shirley, Holdsworth was playing steady golf, but his partner's brilliant putting enabled them to win. The fourth rounds of the Meares and Hagley cups were played at Hagley, where the going was good. At Russley J. R. Stevenson and J. R. Templin came in with a card of 5 up to win the four-ball bogey played on Saturday, and A. M. Fowler and J. L. Barraball won a Stableford pairs competition. The club also had a win in a match against Hagley. Harewood played off the first round of the Blank Cup, a knockout competition in which a large field started. E. A. Cleland had a comfortable win in the senior division of a stroke handicap, played at Avondale. He came in with a net 66, which was six strokes ahead of his nearest opponent. Richmond Hill player off the first and some oi the second rounds of the Donnelly Cup. CHRISTCHURCH CLUB Another victory was added to C. Holdsworth's list in foursomes when he won the G. E. Rhodes Cup at Shirley on Saturday with Miss E. Nutt. In this competition, which is a mixed foursome flag match, they took the flag to" the back of the nineteenth green, four strokes at least ahead of the next pair, who had left the flag a short yard from the eighteenth hole. The victory, however, was not so much attributable to Holdsworth's play as to the phenomenal putting of his partner. Time after time she saved strokes on each green with putts up to 20 feet in length. Holdsworth was playing very sound golf, his iron shots being very accurate, but he left the brilliant part of the game to his partner. They were out in 42 and the second half was completed in 39 with only one lapse—three putts on the Shirley green. C. J. Ward and Miss J. Stevenson, who had won the cup for the two previous years, were among the few who played their last stroke down the eighteenth fairway. Each has been reduced considerably in handicap, and with an allowance of only 78 strokes 'for the round they played consistently to finish as close to the winners as they did. The lowest handicap pair in A. R. Blank and Miss V. Fleming reached the last green and completed the course in 78. lIAREWOOD CLUB Ideal conditions prevailed for the first round and part of the second round of the Blank Cup played at Harewood during the week-end.
