REGISTRATION OF MOTOR VEHICLES

PROMPT APPLICATION I URGED ' ! The total registration of motor- ( vehicles in Christchureh last May was j 7611 out of the approximately 17,000! in the district, but registration of i many of them is, as a rule, distributed throughout the whole year. May, however, is the neriod of concentrated registration. When the registration department closed on Friday afternoon 1048 vehicles had been registered at the Christchureh Post Office for the new season, and it was the ninth day of the new registration period. At the corresponding stage last May 1310 vehicles had been registere. A Post Office official urged on Saturday that all motor owners intending to register this month should perform the task as soon as possible, so as to avoid a very heavy rush at the last minute. A further request was that motor owners should memorise their engine and chassis numbers, as well as the old registration number. All these numbers had to be given at the registration counter, and it was often found, in the rush of late registrations, that people cither mixed up the numbers, or else did not know their engine and chassis numbers at all: Ignorance on these points meant loss of a place in the queue, while the numbers were obtained by the owner. All motor owners are now, as they register, being handled a pamphlet on road risks, issued by the Transport Department. The leaflet, entitled "The Toll of the Road," contains the number of motoring deaths and accidents occurring in New Zealand, and urges motorists to show constant care on the road. A particular appeal is made to motor-cyclists, with the observation that insurance records for the last five years show that there i- a higher traffic risk with motor-vehicles. Finally, the pamphlet quotes some cardinal rules for safety in motoring.
