NORTH CANTERBURY
RANGIORA The first meeting of the newlyelected Rangiora-Waikuku Beach Domain Eoard was held on Saturday evening in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's office, Rangiora. Mr W. Stalker presided. There were also present—Messrs W. A. Rowse, J. Mascn. R. Macdonald, E. S. Taylor, J. Little. S. Stokes, and the Hon. D. Budtio. M.L.C. It was decided to send letters of appreciation to three old members of the board—Messrs C. Skevington, C. Mcrris, *md J. Priest. Mr W. Stalker was appointed chairman of the board until the annual meeting, which will be held at Waikuku Eeach on May 25, at 1.30 p.m. The chairman stated that water would have to be provided for the south end of the residential area and a well would have to be sunk. The linking up of the residences would be a costly undertaking. He was having an estimate of the cost of the work prepared. That would be discussed at the annual meeting, also the health officer's report on sanitation arrangements. The treasurer reported a bonk credit balance of £361 18s Bd. Mothers' Day was celebrated at the churches yesterday. White flowers were worn by the congregations and suitable addresses were given by the preachers. KAIKOURA No trace has been found of Mr John Hark\ who was lost in the bush near the Climatic Reserve at Waimangaroa. Several residents have traversed t'.'ifj country, A meeting of the Presbyterian Y/ome-n's Missionary Union was held at tho home of Mrs W. G. Todd on Friday afternoon, Miss R. Gibson presiding in the absence of Mrs F. Robertson. Sewing was done by those present. Mesdames J. Cooper and H. Stack were the hostesses. LITTLE RIVER Mrs E. Haines, jun. ("Seaview," Okain's Bay, Banks Peninsula), who has been the guest of Mrs G. Pocock 'Western Valley, Little River), has returned home. Mrs C. Withers (Little River) Is visiting friends In Christchurch.
OXFORD The annual meeting of the Oxford Domain Board was held in the Coronation Hall. Present:—Messrs A. Baxter (chairman), C. E. Brown, F. Debenham, and H. G. Parish. The secretary presented the balancesheet for the year ending March 31, 1934. The receipts for the year were £174 3s 9d, and the expenditure £l7l 0s 7d, leaving a balance of £3 3s 2d. Liabilities amounted to £5 ss. The balance-sheet was adopted. The chairman said that owing to the financial position of the board, the year had been a quiet one, and necessary improvements had to he held over for a time. He thanked the members and secretary for their assistance during the year. Mr Baxter was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. An ordinary meeting ol the board was then held. Acting on advice from the AuditorGeneral, the arrears of the former tenant of a reserve, amounting to £129 4s, were written off. It was agreed not to top the trees on the west side of View Hill Domain this year. It was decided to repair the floor at the entrance of the library. , , , , Mr H. G. Parish was thanked for his financial help to the board. Accounts amounting to £lO 13s 3d were passed for payment. HORNBY The fortnightly dance organised by the "Idano" dance assembly was held in the Orange Hall, Hornby, on Saturday evening. The third heat of the "aeroplane" Monte Carlo was held. Winners of novelty dances were:— Lucky spot. Miss J. Harman and partner; Monte Carlo, Mrs R. Tcdd and Mr H. D. Moran. Music for the dancing was supplied by the Holland-Ham-ilton orchestra, extras being played by I Miss Ngarita Kenworthy and Mr Hamilton. During the evening an item was contributed by Miss Edna Harrison. Mr R. Todd was master of ceremonies. Among those present were Mesdames A. Hampton, R. Lodge, J. Coburn, C. Whitelaw, H. D. Moran, A. Moran, R. Todd, J Burke, R. Mortimer, C. Baker, P Baker. V. S. Cox, Johnson, W. Stuart, C. Poulsen, T. Baker, Harrison. On Tuesday, members of the Hornby Women's Institute entertained members of the Templeton Women's Institute at a social evening held in the parish hall, Hornby. The winners of competitions held during the evening were Mrs Rowe, Mrs Thompson, Miss Spicer, and Mr Hammond. On Wednesday evening the Islington Social Hall Committee held a successful social in the hall. The winners of competitions were Mrs R. Woodham, Miss M. Kingsford. Mr Maclaine and Mr M. Evans. On Saturday evening the Hornby School Committee held its weekly social in the Islington Hall. The winners of the competitions were Mrs A. Thompson. Mrs Davies, sen., Mr Turner. Mr F. O'Flynn, Mrs Ward, and Mrs Simpson. LADBROOKS There was a good attendance at the Ladbrooks Kail Committee's weekly social. The winners were:—Women, Miss McLaughlin, Miss Eunice Meyer; gents, Mr McConnell and Mr G. McCarthy. A start has been made on the main road in the preparation work for bttumfnotttJ sealing.
SOUTHBRJDGE The annual meeting of the St. James's Young People's Clnb was presided over by the Rev. C. L. Wilson. Officers elected for the ensuing year were:—President, the Rev. C. L. Wilson; vice-president, Mrs Wilson: secretary and treasurer, Miss V. Dyce; committee, Messrs M. Hintz, G. Hill. L. Hickman, E. Home, and J. Searle, Messrs F. Parkin. W. Inwood, A. Ridden, H. Rowe, and J. Moorhead. Mr A. C. Chapman, who is leaving the district, was entertained at an afternoon party by the vicar of St. James's Church and the teachers and children of St. James's Sunday School. In presenting Mr Chapman with a prayer book as a token of affection from the Sunday School, the Rev. C. L. Wilson spoke of his good service as a teacher for a number of years and said he would be very much missed. Games and competitions took place. Afternoon tea was served. A party of boys from the Presbyterian Orphanage, Christchurch, spent the week-end camping in the church ground at Southbridge, along with Mr V. French, of the Presbyterian Social Service Association. At the Town Hall they gave an interesting gymnastic disnlav. A vocal solo was also given bv* Billy Eggelton. Mr French thanked the residents for gifts sent for the use of the boys in camp. LEESTON Commissioner W. Johnston presided at the monthly meeting of the Leeston Town Board. Sympathy was extended to Mr and Mrs L. C. Vicary in the death of Mrs Vicary'a father. There had been no cases of infectious disease during Jhe month, according to the health inspector's report. A Christchurch drapery firm wrote stating that it considered the time had arrived v/hen it should object to being called upon to pay a hawker's license fee to the board. It was decided to insist upon the payment of the fee provided for in the by-laws. It was decided to co-operate with the Ellesmere County Council in its application to have additional roads declared main highways. Application is also to be made to the Highways Board for estimates of the cost of additional tar-sealing or paving in High street. Commissioner W. B. Bray's resignation as a member of the board was accepted. A report was presented by the chairman on the conference between local bodies and the St. John Ambulance Association, for which he was thanked. After the business had been dealt with at the monthly meeting of the Leeston branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, the vicepresident, Mrs W. O. Rennie, on behalf of members, presented a vase to Mrs S. M. Jackman, who will leave Leeston shortly to live at Methven. Reference was made to the keen interest taken in the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union and church affairs generally by Mrs Jackman, and good wishes for her future health and happiness were expressed. DUNSANDEL At a general meeting of the Dunsandel Football Club, over which Mr W. C. Bicheno presided, the resignation of Mr A. A. Macphersbn was accepted. Mr J. H. Dark was elected to the vacancy. It was decided to nominate Mr J. W. Calder for the position of sole selector for the Ellesmere representative team. A refreshment committee was appointed for service in the entertainment of visiting teams. The committee was recommended to organise a function to raise funds for transport.
SHEFFIELD On Thursday evening the Sheffield Boys" Social Club held a successful dance, given in return to the dance organised by the local Girls' Club last month. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mr A. Hart (piano), and Mr'S. Syme 'violin), of Kimberley. Messrs A. F. Roswill and H. Sykes were the masters of ceremonies. Several novelty dances were held, and won by the following:— Statue dance, Miss Innes and Mr H. C. Ferguson;, lucky spot waltz, Miss Dorie Marsh and Mr Alex Graydon; Monte Carlo fox trot. Miss M. Jenkins and Mr A. Roswill. On behalf of the members of the Girls' Club,' Mrs C. D. Sealey thanked the Bovs' Club for the dance. The Rev. D. K. Boyd presided at the annual meeting cf the Sheffield branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, which was held in the Manse on Thursday afternoon. The balance-sheet and report of the work carried on during the last year disclosed the branch to be in a very satisfactory position. Mr T. S. Innes was re-elected as the president, and Mrs H. Taylor was appointed to fill the vacancy of secretary in place of Mrs W. Fraser, whose resignation was received with regret. A vote of thanks was accorded the office bearers for the work done during the year. Mrs Pollock and her two children are staying at "Erndale," Waddington. Mrs W. Brown (Porirua, Wellington), is visiting her mother, Mrs C. Long, "Malvern House." YALDHURST The first euchre party, which was held on Friday evening, was well attended. The prizes were won by Mr L. Lynskey 1, Mrs Anderson 2, Mr B. Chisnall 1, and Mr J. Still 2. BANKS PENINSULA RABBIT BOARD + MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS The monthly meeting of the Banks Peninsula Rabbit Board was held recently. Present: Messrs Nutt (chairman),* Chapman, Gray, Richfield, Coop, and the stock inspector (Mr R. M. Henderson). It was decided that the unpaid rates be handed to the board's solicitors for collection. Mr Chapman stated, that the travelling facilities of the board's inspectors were out of date, and after some discussion it was decided to offer the inspectors a yearly allowance for petrol if the inspectors found the vehicle. The secretary was instructed to write to the Hon. Geo. Witty expressing the board's gratitude for his valuable help in dealing with the live-rab-bit question. It was left to three members of the board to see to the erection of a strip of fencing at the foot of the lake. Mr Nutt was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year.
