PAPANUI NEWS
NORTHCOTE HOMES ! During the recent heavy rains the Northcote houses escaped flooding, but in 1923 and 1925 many of the houses had the floors covered with water. The improvement is due to the efforts of Mr W. .T. Walter, who secured the lowering cf Kruse's drain and had a large pipe drain put in alongside St Bede's College. A feature of the Northccte lay-out that has been commented on by visitors is the street and footpath formation. Although the plans were prepared 16 years ago, the design is that now advocated by modern town planners for garden suburbs. The asphalt paving is alongside the properties with a strip of lawn near i the channels. The channels are of the I flat design now being adopted in the newer city streets. The roadway is the modern 18 feet. Good progress has been made with the alteration to the hall, and a letter has been sent to the Papanui Beautifying Association inviting assistance with garden and reserve improvements. A public meeting will be called to open the new hall and opportunity will be taken to discuss further improvements. Peace Meeting: The monthly meeting of the Papanui branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held at St. Giles' Sunday school. Members of the Styx and Belfast branches were present. Mrs Graham presided. Mrs B. U. Lowe, M.A., of Timaru, gave an interesting address on the League of Nations, and said that of the 66 nations 57 were in the league. The speaker appealed to those present to join the League of Nations Union and endeavour to mould public opinion in the interests of peace. , The Rev. E. Bandy read from the Scriptures, and prayers were offered by the Rev. Mr Peters and the Rev. J. Farrar. The Rev. A. Hopper thanked Mrs Lowe for the address, and items were given by Miss Feggy Borgfeldt (piano solo) and Mesdames Le Brun and Donald (songs). Card Evenings A successful euchre evening was held by the Horticultural Society at the Memorial Hall. Mesdames Owen and Briggs were equal for first place and Mr Sullivan was third. The winners at the Advance Northcote Association's card evening were Mr Tapper and Mrs S. Munro. Tennis Club's Dance St Paul's Tenuis Club held an enjoyable dance in the Gaiety Hall. Music was supplied by the BrownDeidrich orchestra and extras were played by Mr Prank Smith. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mrs R. Gartner and Mr J. Mawson and a lucky spot dance by Miss O'Callaghan and Mr H. Ha'dler. An exhibition tap dance was given by Mr R. Deidrich, and Mr Colin Carr was master of ceremonies. Fapanui Pictures "Sailors' Luck," the latest co-star-ring feature of James Dunn and Sally Eilers, will be screened to-n.'ght. It is a hilarious tale of a love-sick sailor and a world-wise girl, with a generous sprinkling of comedy and suspense. A cartoon news, and travelogue will complete the programme*
