Sutton Park, Surrey, from where the forebears of the rooks in the Fendalton rookery came, is remembered by a Christchurch man who was born nearby as a most interesting establishment. This man, who is now well past his seventieth year, remembers the owner of Sutton Park, Captain Salwin, as a very keen falconer, who in all his expeditions with his hawks was accompanied by a brown retriever on which rode a pet monkey in a small saddle. Captain Salwin collected wild pigs and also penguins, and had many sent from New Zealand. He lived with a manservant in the lodge, the hall being let to a religious body. The grounds were also let and were used as a stud farm where 100 mares were kept.
