CLIMBERS CAUGHT IN STORM
♦ ASCENT OF MOUNT HL'TT Caught in a severe snowstorm on the toD of Mount Hutt (7180 feet) yesterday, a party of seven members of the Erewhon Mountaineering Club, Ashburton, and two members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, made the descent under very trying conditions. Leaving Mount Hutt station woolsheds at 6.30 a.m., the climbers experienced good weather until a slight storm was encountered at 10 a.m. when within a few hundred feet of the top. The conditions were not sufficiently severe to necessitate an immediate return, and it was decided to make the summit, as stormy weather had prevented some members of the party reaching the top at two previous attempts. As the descent was commenced after a few minutes rest, a storm of sleet and snow drove with considerable force from the southwest across the tracks of the party, making progress very difficult. The extremely cold atmosphere caused additional discomfort. The mountain was soon well coated with snow, and with poor visibility the party got off its track after descending a shingle slide.
