RULERS OF TURKEY AND PERSIA
A MEETING LIKELY .DEROGATORY REFERENCES IN muTisir press iß?.t"ii.-:i >. ..'•■,! :\:. v,;;:i:.;.:;s i.' (Received April 25, 5.5 p.m.) HUGBY. April 23. Asked if lie would make a statement about the arrangements for the impending meeting of the rulers of Persia and Turkey, Sir John Simon (Foreign Secretary) replied that reports had reached the British Government that the Shah of Persia might pay an official visit to the President of the Turkish Piepubiic during the summer. The matter was one which fell entirely within the sphere of those two countries and did not concern the British Government in any way. Further asked by Sir Arnold Wilson if he could say anything which would tend to discourage the publication in Great Britain of statements of a misleading and dero;.*ntory character about the rulers of these two countries. Sir John replied: "I deplore no less than mv honourable and gallant friend the appearance of such reference to th:: heads of foreign states with whom his Majesty's Government is on terms of cordial friendship, and under whose -'.ble leadership the.'c countries have made sucli remarkable progress, but. as he is aware. his Majesty's Government is not in a position to take any action in such cares. Public opinion will no doubt know what value to attach to such references."
