MEN DISCHARGED FROM RELIEF WORKS Three men employed on the Rapaki relief works were stood down by the Public Works Department last week, allegedly because their work was unsatisfactory and also because their talk disturbed the other men on the job. On Tuesday their case was brought under the notice of Mr R. T. Bailey, officer in charge of the Labour Department, and he undertook to review it. Figs are not usually associated with the middle of Europe, but a good crop of this exotic fruit is now being gathered in the Bergstrasse and other dirtricts near Heidelburg, including the Rhenish Palatinate. Up to 200 years ago there were as many fig trees as almond trees in these districts, but until recently when more trees were danted, fig cultivation was neglected. The crop is due to the exceptionally mild climate of this part of southwestern Germany. In favourable years when there are warm autumns even two crops are obtained.
