ATTEMPTED MURDER ALLEGED

MAX COMMITTED FOR TRIAL (PBBS3 ASoOCUTIOK TKLIOtUM.) WELLINGTON, April 24. In the Magistrate's Court, John Conway Murphy, aged 43, a labourer, was charged with attempting to murder Mrs Daisy Heimdal, a charwoman, on the South Town belt on the evening of April 2. He was committed for trial at the Supreme Court by Mr W. F. Stilwell, S.M., and entered a plea of not guilty. Heimdal was able to appear and give evidence in court, having recovered from the knife wounds inflicted upon her. It was stated in the police evidence that Shortly after the time of the assault accused gave himself up voluntarily, and a long statement by him describing the circumstances of the assault and those leading up to it was read out. At the end of the hearing, an application by accused's counsel for the charge to be changed to one of aggravated assault was not upheld by the magistrate.
