UTILITY POULTRY CLUB'S PAPANUI CONTEST SECOND WEEK The thirtieth competition organised by the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club began at Papanui on April 8. Five thousand years ago neolithic man carved pieces of amber into the, 'ikeness of animals where. Danztg nowi is situated, and in the Woldenburg district of Pomerania a representation of a horse was carved. At the same | period, probably about the year BC a Sumerian in I'ar-oIT Mesopotamia carved a steer out of bone. These and many other interesting animal sculptures, covering the period from about 3000 B.C. down to the Baroque era, are now being shown in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin. All departments of the state museums have contributed their treasures to the exhibition, which is arranged in cognate groups, not historically, so that one sees, for example, Grecian coins of the fourth and fifth centuries-B.C. beside ornamenlal coins of the year 1449, Chinese plastic works beside products of the Meissen Porcelain Factors, etq,
