ACCIDENTS
"HIT-AND-RUN" MOTORIST, | CYCLIST KNOCKED DOWN AT j HORNBY \ A "hit-and-run" motorist at Hornby on Tuesday afternoon knocked down a cyclist, Mr J. Reid, of 24 Maxwell street, Riccarton, and injured him extensively about the legs. Mr Reid's cycle was caught up in the front of ' the car and was carried away. It was j found later at Templeton, a distance | of three miles further on. j The accident occurred about 2.45 p.m. near the Motorways service station at Hornby. A St. John Ambulance was summoned and Mr Reid was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital, but he was later sent to his home. The number of the car was obtained, and when this was notified to the police in Christchurch. they communicated with all the main towns as far south as Timaru. Up to a late hour last night, however, the driver of the car had not been apprehended. It is understood that the car was hired from I a firm in Christchurch. | i MOTOR-CYCLIST INJURED ! I S. Werner, of 31 Somerset street, i Addington, collided with a motor-car while riding his motor-cycle at the corner of Ruskin and Selwyn streets yesterday. He suffered injuries to the head, and was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital. His condition last night was satisfactory. MOTOR-CAR STRIKES POLE A motor-car travelling to Christ- 1 church from Selwyn last night struck a telegraph pole near the Sockburn railway crossing, and was badly smashed. There were three persons in the car, but only one, Miss E. McMcnamin, of Brougham street, Sydenham, was injured. She suffered fairly severe wounds in the head, but after being attended by Dr. Jennings at Sockburn and having stitches inserted at the Christchurch Public Hospital she went to her home. The accident happened at 7.55 p.m., on the Christchurch side of the crossing. NURSE INJURED Nurse Scott, a member of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association, was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital at 12.30 p.m. yesterday suffering from head injuries and shock. She had met with a cycling accident at the corner of Colombo street and Moorhouse avenue, but was unable to say whether she had fallen from her machine or been knocked off. ' , MOTOR-CAR SOMERSAULTS } ; - I 1 i'UESS ASSOCIATION TEI-BOKAM.i I NEW PLYMOUTH, April 24. j Somersaulting once after it left the road in the Awakino Valley, a service car came to rest on its wheels a few feet from the river yesterday, the four passengers and the driver having a reI markably fortunate escape. Only one. Miss C. Norris, of England, received I injury. She was cut on the left side ! of the head by glass from the windows j of the car, all of which were broken, ( but after receiving attention she was ! able to travel by a later car to her destination, the Waitomo Caves. The steering rod broke when the i driver, A. J. Harvey, was about to pull the car round a corner. The car failed to respond, and plunged over the bank. It: somersaulted once, landed on its wheels, and was stopped by dense bushes, having fallen 15 feet. The car i was badly damaged. GOLDMINER INJURED ■ rrttss association telegram.i i BLENHEIM, April 24. , ' A veteran Mahakipawa goldminer, George Clements, aged about 70, living alone in a whare bach in the hills from Mahakipawa, was found unconscious yesterday on the rocks of White Pine creek. He had evidently fallen from the bank or from a bridge. He was taken to hospital and j his condition is fairly serious. |
