CITY MILK SUPPLY
CONFERENCE TO-DAY
MAYOR GIVEN WATCHING BRIEF BY COUNCIL
The Mayors of Christchurch and suburban boroughs, chairmen of local bodies, and local members of Parliament in the district have been asked to attend a meeting convened by the Christchurch Dairymen's Association for to-day, when the placing of a bill before Parliament with a view to having the local milk supply controlled by a milk council, similar to that of Auckland, will be considered. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) reported to the City Council last evening that he had received an invitation to attend. The council discussed this at some length, and eventually decided that the Mayor attend the meeting. Cr. Archer said he thought it best not to appoint a representative of the council but to allow councillors to go to the meeting as individuals. He thought the Christchurch reorganisation should be on similar lines to the system of milk supply in Wellington, and not on similar lines to the system in Auckland. Cr. E. H. Andrews suggested that a representative of the council be appointed with instruction from the council. That any representative of the council should attend the meeting with a watching brief only was the opinion of Cr. M. E. Lyons. The Auckland Municipal Milk Supply Act he considered the most iniquitous piece of legislation ever put through Parliament. He asked why the price of drapery and other goods should not be fixed if the price of milk was to be fixed. The legislation for Auckland was rushed through the House and one result of it was that the consumption of milk in Auckland had already fallen by 10 per cent. I The fixing of the price of milk was merely bolstering up, as the Government had already countenanced in other ways, the land values of property surrounding the city. The council should be very careful before giving, an opinion on the efficacy of the suggested control scheme. It was decided that the Mayor attend the meeting with instructions to report to the council.
