RANGIORA At the meeting of the executive c the Rangiora Unemployment Commit tee yesterday three new registration and an application lor labour unde the 4a scheme were received. Th Commissioner of Unemployment wrot approving the appointment of th Rev. H. I. Hopkins, of Tunhiwi, as ad viser to the committee in regard t the Maori relief workers. A fette was also received from the commis sioner asking that the Unemploymen Board be furnished with copies of th various local bodies' balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, 1934. KAIAFOI The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi i branch of the Returned Soldiers' Asso- | cialiou was held on Saturday evening, j Mr J. Gordon presiding over an alj tendance of about 70 members. The { annual report stated that the memberj ship was 79. Reference was made to j the various social functions held, j which had had the desired effect of j fostering a social spirit among mein- : bers. Three cnckol matches had been [ played with th" .New Brighton subi branch of the association and a cards and shooting match had been held against the Rangiora sub-branch. Tin* children's Cnristmas parly had been a great success, more than 200 children being entertained. Funds for this were augmented considerably by the proceeds of a cake stall organised by the women supporters. The balancesheet showed a balance of assets over liabilities of .Cl 2-!. Thi.' main iteiy of expenditure was £74 paid in subsidising wages. Dr. Maxwell Ramsay praised the services given to the association by the president. Mr J. The fixing of a date for holding the annual reunion was left to the execu--1 tlve. It was decided to recommend i the incoming executive to consider bringing into operation immediately a scheme"of relief work for unemployed returned men. It was reported that the amount at present in hand from the Poppy Day appeal was £36 4s 4d, and with further returns to come it was expected to reach £47. HANMER SPRINGS The football season will open on Saturday next, when a team from Cheviot will meet Ha timer Springs in the Hurunui Sub-Union competition on the Hanmer Springs Domain. Building activity is very marked now at Hanmer Springs. Several houses are being built, and several other contracts are to be let shortly. They are mostly small residences. The boarding-house previously known as "Glenalvon" has been mostly rebuilt, fire having destroyed part of it 18 months ago. Mrs E. Lahmcrt and Miss A. Lah-1 mert, of Hanmer Springs, gave a social evening last week to Mr and Mrs Hedley Peck at the church house. The large room had been tastefully decorated and carpeted. There was a large attendance, and an enjoyable evening was spent in cards, games, and music. Mrs Lahmert presented Mrs Peek with a handbag on behalf of those present, and wished both Mr and Mrs Peek a pleasant voyage to England. Items were given by Mrs C. Peters, Mrs P. Breckon, Messrs H. J. Peek, J. Wilson, H. Farrow, J. Manson, A. J. Lahmert, and the Rev. E. B. Moore. Mrs J. Wilson was the accompanist. Mrs Hedley Peek entertained the members of the local committee of Dr. Barnado'.s Home and their friends at the church house on Saturday afternoon. There was a good attendance of members and friends. Mrs Peek, who is president of the committee, thanked members for their support during the year. The boxes were opened. The amount of £2 Is lid contributed will be forwarded. The Rev. C. Sedgewick addressed the children on the work done by Dr. Barnado's Homes. Items were given by Mr and Mrs J. Wilson. Miss Betty Hughes, and songs and recitations by the children. Mrs J. HAWARDEN The annual meeting and reunion of the Hawardcn-Waikari sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association was held in the Hawarden hall. The bal-ance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l4 19s Id in the general fund, an improvement on last year's figures of £l4 5s 7d. The bent lit fund credit balance was £907 lis 2d. The excess of expenditure over income was £1 18s 2d. which was considered very satisfactory. The retiring chairman, Mr E. G. Fahey. outlined the various activities of the .year, and thanked those Present for the generous support he had received during his term of office. The election of officers was as follows: President, Mr J. VV. Wright: vice-presi-dent, Mr A. 13. Wilkes; honorary secretary and treasurer. Mr F. J, Steel; general committee, Messrs C. W. McKcegan. W. Adams. E. G. Fahcv. A. Webb. H. M. Carr. H. Inch. E. A. Grimwood, Jock Forrester, and F. Quigley. The reunion was attended by about 100 members and friends, including the president and secretary, and members of the Christchurch branch's executive of the association, and Ranuiora representatives. I SCARGILL ! The Scargill school children gave their annual concert in the Scargill hall. There was a large audience and the entertainment was enjoyable and successful in every way. The scholars had been trained by Mrs B. A. Coe, with the assistance of Miss M. C. H. Ives, and produced a fine and varied programme of items comprising songs, sketches, and plays, folk dances, and choruses. Piano solos were given by Miss Hazel Gardner and Miss Celene Johnson, and Miss Jean Johnson also assisted with solo parts in the programme. The chairman of the school committee, Mr E. Gardner, expressed [ the thanks of the committee to Mrs i Coe and Miss Ives, and all who had helped, for their work in organising the concert and training the children. Mrs Coe and Miss Ives each received a present from the children, in appreciation of their work. Supper was served after the programme, and the hall cleared for dancing. Music was played by Mr C. Heney. The school prize and picnic fund will benefit by about £lO from the proceeds of the evening. On Saturday afternoon a friendly football match was played between teams from the Glenmark and Scargill Clubs on (he latter club's ground. The game resulted in a win for the visitors by 13 points to 8. Tries were scored for Glenmark by K. White, G. Russell, and E. Sloss, two of which were converted by A. Cameron. For Scargill, L. Harrison scored a try which was converted by A. Gardner, who also kicked a penalty goal. Mr B. A. Coe was referee. The teams were afterwards entertained at afternoon tea in the ( Scargill hall by the local women. The Hurunui Sj.ib-imion competitions will commence next Saturday, and the Scargill Club, which has entered a junior team, has been drawn to meet the VVaiau juniors at Scargill.

DARFIELD The monthly meeting of the Darfield branch of the Mothers' Union was held in the lounge of the Memorial Hall. The vicar, the Rev. A. S. Moffatt, opened the meeting with the union service. In the unavoidable absence of the president. Mr Moffatt also read J the second paper on the subject, "A j Mother's Vocation." Afternoon tea was I served, the hostesses being Mesdames j L. Register, and R. S. Williams. I Arrangements have been completed for the annual dance in aid of St. Saviour's orphanages.- to be held on Friday. The New Collegians' Band has been engaged and many generous I gifts towards the supper have been j received. [ Arrangements have been made for ■ (he Malvern combined choir to assist ! at the annual Anzac Day service, which is held in the Memorial Hall, Darfield. The Rev. T. Paterson presided at the monthly meeting of the local branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union. Correspondence was read from Miss Yansen, of Kongehuen, and Miss Annie James, of Kaaihau. China. It was decided to do the usual knitting to assist the Maori Mission, and Miss I. Gillanders was authorised to buy the necessary wool. The president commented favourably on the satisfactory result of the bazaar recently held at Kirwee, and thanked the women of the congregation. A donation was forwarded to the Dunedin Women's Training Institute. The hostesses were Mesdames G. C. Warren and T. Westwood. LITTLE RIVER j The Little River Tennis Club closed its courts for the season on Saturday. There were many members and friends present. Mr W. H. Montgomery, chairman of the Domain Board, congratulated the club on its membership, and its method of running its affairs, and wished it every success. He then presented the following cups and trophies won during the season:—Montgomery Cup for the women's championship: Miss Beatrice Line. Men's championship cup: D Radford. Women's handicap, Elliot Cup: Miss L. Le Compte. Women's handicap competition trophy: Miss B. Line. Men's handicap competition trophy: W. Bulman.

In the first football match of the season the Waihora B team was beaten by the Ljttle River B team, at the Awa-Iti Domain, by 30 points to 0. The president's side of the Little River Women's Institute entertained the vice-president's side to a picture party recently. After the pictures games were played and supper was served in the supper room. A fruit cake was given by Miss J. Keenan and iced by Mrs Lee. The vice-president, Mrs Vanstone, on behalf of the winning side, thanked the president (Mrs McGowan) and her side for a very pleasant evening. There were CO members present.

Hubert Mayr. chosen to play St. Peter in the Passion Play performances at Ober-Ammergau this summer, in succession to Peter 3cndl whose death was recently announced, is a member of a noted family of actors. Well-known relatives include Joseph Mayr, who was the Christus in 1870. 1880. and 1890: Guido Mayr, Judas of the last two Passion Plays; and Klara Mayr. who will be the Magdalene in the jubilee plays this summer. Of his immediate family, who are woodcarvers, his father played the Apostle Thomas in 1922. A younger sister played the Angel on" the Mount of Olives in 1930, and will have the same role this year, and his elder brother, who played the Rabbi in 1930, is cast as Nicodemus. Hubert Mayr will himself be remembered by visitors to former plays as the Apostle James.
