Captain M. J. C. de Meric, M.V.0., has taken over the duties of AssistantDirector of Naval Equipment, Admiralty, in succession to Captain S. S. Captain de Meric was promoted in December, 1929, and has since commanded the cruisers Diomede and Dunedin on the New Zealand station. His last service at the Admiralty was on the staff of the Second Sea Lord in 1927-29. _ Miss Lucille Lisle, the young Wellington actress, made a good recovery from the operation which she underwent some months ago, and she returned in due course to her part in The Late Christopher Bean," which is still having a great run at St. James' Theatre, with Sir C. Hardwicke and Ldith Evans playing the leads. Miss J-.isle has a minor part as one of the two daughters of the Welsh doctor, but she plays it with understanding and marked charm. On March 13 the High Commissioner for New Zealand attended, at Goldsmiths' Hall, the annual testing of the coinage of the realm, known as the "Trial of the Pyx." The Pyx jury consists of freemen of the Goldsmiths' Company. In the Middle Ages it was not uncommon for the King's moneyers to mutilate money for their own profit, and it was to prevent this that the "Trial of the Pyx" was originally held. Last year the jury stated: "We found no gold coins in the Pyx," and added that the tested samples were "within the remedy as to weight" allowed under the Coinage Act. Dr. P'elix M. Keesing (Auckland) has been appointed to a part-teaching, part-research position on the staff of the University of Hawaii. He will leave London late in May for Honolulu, via the United States.
