WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

THE PEAKS Mrs L. H. White presided at the monthly meeting of The Peaks Women's Institute. Competitions were won as follows:—Vegetable posy, Mrs L. H. White 1, Mrs K. Campbell and Mrs J. Quigley 'equal) 2. Bowl of leaves and berries: Mrs Cowie 1, Mrs McKcegan 2. Mrs White gave a report of the recent annual meeting of the federation. Mrs Hewett was hostess at the tea hour. BROOKSIDK Mrs F. S. Candy presided over the monthly meeting of the Brookside Women's Institute. The demonstrator for the afternoon was Mrs E. King, of Christchurch. who gave a most interesting address on floral arrangement, and eolour blending. The competition in exhibiting a woman's spray, drew good entries, the placings being: Mrs Joseph Brooks 1 and 2. Miss Joyce Candy 3. The hostesses were Mrs Chamberlain, Mrs Hight, Miss Chamberlain. WINCHESTER Mrs G. Burborough presided at the monthly meeting of the Winchester Women's Institute. Miss M. Smith gave a humorous recitation. A competition in solving jumbled girls' and iDoys' names was won by Mrs J. S. Smith, witli Mrs T. A. Deßenzy second. The hostesses were Mesdames W. E. Knight: and T. A. Deßenzy. PARNASSUS At the monthly meeting of the Parnassus Women's Institute Mrs Turner presided. An interesting demonstration on making book-ends was given by Mrs Turner. Competitions resulted: Making a paper hat. Mrs Collard; word-guessing, Mrs Collard; bestsewn buttonhole, Mrs Wilkinson 1, Mrs Coe 2. The hostesses were Mrs Orchard and Mrs Wilkinson. WOODBURY Mrs L. E. Williams presided at the fifth annual meeting of the Woodbury Women's Institute. The president commented on the year's work, and thanked all who had helped. The balance-sheet showed a good credit. Mrs Wooding in her illness, and members wished her a speedy recovery. Mrs Broadbent, of Whitchurch, Hants., England, gave an address on English institutes, and spoke of community needle work. She consented to draw a design for linen squares to be worked by members, and made into a quilt. Mrs Hodgkin sang the song of the English Federation of Women's Institute, "Jerusalem." Mrs Sharpe reported that the sewing circle would begin soon, and received names of members who were willing to sew during the winter months. Members wished Miss Davies, who is going to England, a happy voyage and a safe return to Woodbury. Miss Davies was given a bouquet of roses. The following officers were elected:—President, Mrs Williams; vice-presidents, Mesdames Drummond, Sharpe, Harper, Markham, and Miss McLean; committee, Mesdames Drummond, Sharpe, Markham, Baker, Tait, Gillespie, McEvey, Harper, Williams, and Chisnall, and Misses McLean, Williams. Wooding, Tripp, Baker, Rice, Webb, Blakiston, and Vance; secretary, Mrs Chisnall; treasurer. Miss Vance; press reporter, Mrs Sharpe; sales table, Miss T. Williams and Miss F. Rice; competitions. Mrs Baker; "home and country," Miss Tripp and Mrs Bennett.
